Geneon's Fall a Positive for FUNimation?

This was reported on ICv2.

Navarre CEO Kerry Deacon, who held a conference call today to discuss the company's most recently quarterly earnings report (see "FUNimation Sales Down, But on Budget"), discussed the impact of Geneon's recent collapse (see "Dentsu Eats $40 Million") on its FUNimation division. "[G]enerally we believe it could be positive to our position in the marketplace, both from a sales and a content acquisition basis," he said of the events.

Deacon noted that Geneon had some "very strong content such as Sailor Moon, Van Helsing, and Black Lagoon, whose futures are unknown."

I don't know why he said Sailor Moon as title.

I think FUNimation should pick up the original Tenchi Muyo OVAs, Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, and Dual Parallel Trouble Adventure. All of these titles would be good since FUNimation is currently carrying two Tenchi Muyo series, the current Tenchi Muyo OVA and Tenchi Muyo GXP.

The only thing I can think of is that Pioneer/Geneon owned the rights to Sailor Moon S and SuperS way back in the day, but that was like 7 years ago.

The real question is who is going to pick up all of those orphaned Geneon titles now?
I personally would rather see ADV pick up Dual since they already have
Neon Genesis Evangelion and Dual is basically a spoof of NGE so that would make a great addition to their stable of titles.

I'm just worried about how all those Black Lagoon fans are going to react if they never get their second half of the series. I mean, think about it. Black Lagoon fans...

No, the real question is...why did nobody backhand him for calling Hellsing Ultimate, Van Helsing.

I managed to watch it all before it got licensed anyway. =p

How long does the license run before another company can legally pick the titles up?

FUNimation should also get Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate. I mean after all, they already have two vampire titles, so why not some more for the fans to sink their teeth into? (ok, bad pun)

No need to redo the original Hellsing. On top of it being old, and finished...it is nowhere near as good as the new Hellsing Ultimate. I doubt they would want to hurt the new series by dragging the old one out.

Same with Soultaker, also because there are other titles by its director, and it is kind of a spoof of Blue Seed and NGE.

Now, that's a good idea. Lain and Last Exile are such "mature" (figuratively) shows that someone like ADV should pick them up. Didn't they pick up Gilgamesh and Welcome to the NHK? Those are figuratively mature titles. And Karin? Well, totally Funimation. It's a vampire title (will appeal to Trinity Blood/Darker Than BLACK fans) but it's kinda shojo-romance-ish (will also appeal to fans of Furuba, Kodocha, Tenchi Muyo).

As long as someone somewhere eventually ships Samurai Champloo vol. 1 with the collectors box, I'm satisfied. Seriously Geneon, what was up with that? You did everything else right.

I think that since Genon has died it makes Funimation the leader for licensing houses in the US. Hellsing Ultimate WILL get picked up at some point people. Don't worry about it. Titles that won't be will be probably be things that have been out on the market for years now. Lain, Black Heaven, Trigun, *******, Gankutsuou, Fafner, etc. I can't see someone picking the oldies up this coming year. Possibly at some point someone will and re-release them but I'd be more worried about Black Lagoon and Shonen Onmyougi. I don't see Gungrave, Texhnolyze, Samurai Champloo or Last Exile coming back either.
