Baccano!

A new summer title premiering on July 26th, caught my attention.
Eastern Standard wrote:1930 - New York.
Prohibition makes the gangsters rich...and makes it hard for alchemists trying to recreate the liquor that made the immortal.
More than two hundred years ago, a group of thirty alchemists summoned a demon, and asked for immortality. He gave it to them. The only thing that can kill them...is another immortal. Each of them can "eat" the others, obtaining all their knowledge.
The demon also taught one of them how to make the liquor. But only one of them.
In 1930, an old, evil alchemist and his body guard, a young Camorra gangster recently promoted to the highest rank in his small family, and the world's dumbest thieves all crash together on the spiral of destiny, their plot threads crossing and recrossing as coincidence draws them all together.
Baccano! (Italian for "Noise," "Din," "Stupid commotion") is based of a series of Japanese light novels under the same title by the prolific Narita Ryohgo, the Anime specifically drawing from the first three books. Pools from a some classic pulp paperback material such as alchemists, gangsters, ghosts, and assassins, and supposedly meshes very well. So far the series has been publicly slated for 13 episodes (rumors of more abound), and though that seems a bit short, Haruhi Suzumiya raised the bar on both short series and light novel adaptations, so I choose to be optimistic. And bank on more episodes/second season anyway.

The preview for this was in a packet of summer previews I just downloaded, and it does look interesting. Set in 1930's US, it seems (I don''t understand enough Japanese to follow, I'm just guessing from the pictures.) Looks very action-heavy. I'm looking forward to seeing more.
Another new item, Shiguri, also appears to be action-laden. This is apparently a historic samurai yarn of the realistic variety.
A few other possible winners: 'Code-E' doesn't sound like much from the write-ups I've seen, but the preview actually looked intriguiging. I've watched a couple eps of 'Mushi-Uta' without subs, so I couldn't follow much, but it looks to be the latest neato modern fantasy. And 'Higurashi' (when they cry) gets a new season for the horror crowd.
No PV in the packet for the upcoming second season of 'Tokyo Majin', unfortunately.

Just watched the first episode (RAW). Didn't understand a word, and loved every minute of it. Anyone who follows my LJ can expect me to blog the series.

I'm sure I've said it before, but I cannot wait to start watching this series. It combines many things I like into one good looking package.

A brief warning to anyone thinking of picking up this series: it's fairly violent. I wouldn't say it's necessarily an action title (like Eric predicted), but there is a fair amount of violence present, and they don't hold anything back. They don't go overboard either, but definitely not for the faint of heart. Fingers get cut and people get shot in the first 8 minutes (which is amusingly enough otherwise future-tense narration). And that's not even talking about "Check-san."
Suffice to say, you've been warned.

i'm sure if you've watched the trailer, you should be able to guess that the series is bound to have a moderate dosage of violence.
as for those who have not seen the trailer...listen to fish & chip's warning...

Yeah, this is one of the few series that I've been anticipating for the Fall season. The light novels, like the Haruhi light novels, have quite a fan base and are, supposedly, very interesting. On top of that, the production values seem really high. Altogether, I think it could make for a great series.

I am infinitely amused by the series'
opening. I enjoy how they chose introduce all the major players with color shaded panels and subtitles and such. Although given the wide and diverse cast, it's probably also for practical reasons.

I have the first episode RAW on my desktop. I can't speak Japanese, but I still enjoyed it. Awaiting the subs.

The first episode's been successfully subbed. I was worried for awhile it might be too under the radar and skip getting subbed (it happens). Man, this series is going to be such a fun series. I'll jot down some thoughts on it later.

I was pleased by what I saw. I'm definitely going to follow this series.

This may be the first and only Anime where I've actually bothered to find and watch the RAWs in full while waiting on the subs. Continues to be darkly entertaining, even if I have next to no idea what is being said.

Their episode encoder was on vacation until today, which is why the series has been on the backburner. Now that he's back, should be any day now.

I was wondering about that. For the thread's records, I saw the first and am awaiting further subs.

Consider yourselves lucky. I'm limping along with raws only on my favorite current show (Tokyo Majin) as it appears to have nobody subbing the new eps at all. Three weeks in, I (kinda, sorta) know what's going on, but I've returned to my Pimsleur tapes just in case that turns out faster than waiting for the sub (or the legal release, which I will absolutely be purchasing.) It turns out my sukoshi wakarimasu is more sukoshi than I realized.

Just saw the first episode subbed (thanks Fish!).
Looks good. Good animation interesting characters, music and man did this thing move along! Almost every scene was introducing a new person. If I have one complaint it is that there are so many characters to keep track of. Yet I realize this is just a set up episode. I am hooked enough to keep watching.

Episode 2 finally premieres with subtitles. I'll have to nab it later, unfortunately.

I saw the first episode, and I can only hope that the animators and producers are very experienced in setting characters apart, because, watching the first episode, I found myself VERY confused by all the characters. Granted, I think the show has a lot of potential-- the art's lovely and the show has a very nice, enigmatic air to it-- but if you can't set the characters apart, it won't be worth much of anything.
Nevertheless, I'm waiting for the next episode.

Don't worry; from episode 2 and on, things flow in a more natural, readable manner.

So.
After being linked to the first two episodes via direct download...this series seems quite good. XD
Isaac, Miria, and Jacuzzi actually had me laughing out loud during the second episode. XDD I'm curious as to how the massive amounts of characters all tie together, and if it ties together successfully. I love seeing seemingly unrelated plots suddenly merge and make sense, so I might start keeping up with this one. XD
Also because episode 2 ended on a cliffhanger. D:
