Comic Party

Postby eva-boy7985 » Wed Feb 15, 2006 8:42 am

Hey I was just wondering, can anyone give me some info on the series Comic Party that's put out by Rightstuf? I'm collecting the Genshiken anime right now and find it to absolutely hilarious O.o I know that Comic Party follows something of a similar theme in observing the lives and personalities of otakus. All of the reviews I've read have said that it's great, but I wanted some personal opinions as well! Please let me know :-)

I only have the first volume, but I don't like it all that much. It's funny, but it's a little too realistic for my tastes. Don't let my opinion sway you, though. It's only 4 volumes anyway, so if that's what you like the go for it.
(btw, I like your sig. "Okay, umm... strudel, uhh...")

Well, I'm a huge fan of the series, and it's far better than the unabashedly fan-servicey manga (I had to just throw away the first volume of the manga, I thought it was so bad).

But Comi-Pa the anime is very clean, except for some fan service in the mini specials. Check out my review of the anime here:

I love Comic Party!! I laughed my butt off watching the first two volumes! And it's very clean, much moreso than I thought it would be.

Be warned though, the dub is HORRENDOUS. And I almost stopped watching because of that (this show got me hooked on subs) Heh..

Yes, DEFINITELY watch the sub. And hearing Taishi say "My Brother" in English by a Japanese voice actor is just classic.

MAAAAAEEEEE BRRUHHHTHUHHHHH!!!!

Comics Party has been through a long, weird evolution. There was an adult rated japanese language videogame that apparently started it and established the characters (from me, that is second hand info. I can't confirm), followed by more than one Doujinshii, one of which is the basis for the Manga mentioned above. Really, when it comes to fan service and other objectionable material, the Manga is not even vaguely in the Big Leagues, so check out a copy before giving up on it. It is also very funny, but it runs to a different style of humor than the Anime, a bit darker and raunchier.

The Anime is as close to "clean" as you could get with this series. The connection to the Adult-rated game is not evident at all. Just one warning: DON'T watch the dub if you are at all bothered by bad dub casting. One of the characters, who is supposed to be a high school girl sounds like she's 40 and has been smoking for a couple decades.
It's actually a lot more fun in the sub, anyway. The Japanese seiyuu were having a ton of fun doing this one. And the Japanese Taishi should simply not be missed.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.

There were two manga series, right? I think I tried out the doujinshi one and didn't like the fan service or language and tossed it. I mean, having girls literally popping out of their shirts and seeing the f-word page after page was not quality reading for me. I never even tried the other one (if there was, like, an official one).

Do you know which one I'm talking about, Eric (or anyone else)?

I have the first four volumes of the official Comic Party manga, and I love them! They are really good, and pretty clean. There is a little bit of language in the first volume, but it really calms down. I would recomend it.
It's the Comic Party with the same characters from the anime, and the binding is yellow.

Okay, so I'm thinking that that's NOT the one that I read. Maybe I can check out the official one sometime, then.

Yeah, you encountered the older doujinshii. I've only seen descriptions of it, but they ran pretty much to exactly what you just described. The manga currently on the bookshelves in English translation is not based on this one, but on a later, cleaner version (there are still serious issues, especially with song lyrics that keep turning up.) The anime is a whole different animal, covering similar but not precisely the same territory as the manga.

Added by edit, later: not trying to characterize the official manga as benign, just less of a parental concern than other material has been. An example: the official Manga does still have some very fan servicey bonus artwork at the end of the book. Several pin-ups featuring girls in the act of removing clothing, basically. But not quite revealing anything. You get the picture.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.

The anime is not much like the manga. The manga had characters who were in school, college, working etc... all walks of life, from different cities and social cliques joined by their interest in doujinshi.

The anime decides to put them all in High School, in the same class and tries to have some of the manga stories mixed in with typical high school hijinx. The result is a terrible production whether you watch it subbed or dubbed. You can't blame the US distributor for this one... it was messed up in Japan.

I preferred the doujinshi version which seemed to show more of the issues doujinshi creators have. TokyoPop kind of watered down some things and translated some commonly known terms into obscure definitions

Wow, you totally just ripped apart one of my fave anime. I mean, I gave it a 10! Glad to have some counter-opinions, though; it helps round it all out for others to know whether they'll like it. :thumb:

The (official, Tokyopop) manga is my favorite manga series. I've only seen a couple episodes of the anime, and it seems pretty good, though transforming it into a high school story was lame.

The problem with Comic Party is, as you can probably deduce from this thread, the web of its various incarnations is so tangled it takes five minutes to even establish what everybody's talking about when one tries to discuss it.

Sorry to gravedig this thread, but...

I've been thinking about looking into this anime for a little while, and I was wondering: would anyone recommend it? I personally love realistic manga and anime (that's why Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh are two of my favorites).

Also, does anyone know much about Comic Party Revolution? I remember watching a couple of episodes, but saw something rather embarrassing in the preview for...episode 5 I think...it was an episode about cosplaying, right after the amusement park one.

Anyways, any help would be appreciated, arigato!

I watched Comic party a like 5 months ago and i liked it a bit. No much content to worry about in it that i can remember. I would recommend it since you like realistic anime. I have to say it is no where near as funny as Azumanga though.

Id suggest staying away from Comic Party Revolution for all that bad fan service( But you can check it out for yourself if you don't mind that stuff.), but the original Comic Party hardly has any fan service at all except for the mini-episodes. And I really enjoyed watching Comic Party, it just shows the good dedication that many people who write doujinshi(Fan comics). And I respect that.

The TV series ComiPa Revolution is not as fanservicey as the OVAs. It's actually pretty strict that ADV rated it 14+. I've seen both series and the OVAs and it's actually a great series.

Well, I got the first volume of it. So if its too fanservicey then(Well not as much as some of the newer ones, but still), then I don't think that the rest will be any less. Im very sensitive to fanservice as you can see, so I don't think Id want the rest of the show. But I know there are people who are less sensitive and so I guess they can watch it. I could have done without the
"If so-and-so win the cosplay contest then Kazuki will have to write a boys love book".
Honestly that was too much for me.

Ah, Comic Party. An entire manga/anime/game/etc multiseries dedicated to illegal activities and copyright infringement. =D

I wouldn't say they do illegal activities in Comic Party(Alot), I mean haven't you ever been to an anime convention? There anime fans sell there homemade anime collectibles for cash, so I don't think there'd be a crime there. However, there are other things that happen as well like certain photoshoots that aren't exactly honorable.

Now copyright infringement may occur, but sometimes there are original comic books made. Like the second type of comic book Kazuki drew up. Note: not the first one though, which in it he used like many spoofs off of many other types of genres from anime and manga.(Well let's say that was his second, the original was his first and third. He saw that he wasn't getting any money for his original so he tried something different, but it got him nowhere so he decided to switch back.

But your probably right overall, I was just trying to say SOME of the things that I thought may not have been against the law.

I was joking.

Technically, doujinshi of copyrighted works is all illegal, and people whine about how evil doujinshika are profiting off of the original work (despite the fact that TONS of mangaka draw doujinshi too), and I think it's all rather silly. (And I actually do sell fanart and stuff at cons, so I know what you mean.)

Technically, if you write bad yaoi fanfiction or draw Son Goku in your math notes or make an AMV, and you post them online, you're an atrocious lawbreaker. -_-;

I suppose that would be similar to copying a recent piece of art in your own home, and never showing anyone. Kind of illegal maybe, but no one really cares?

Yeah it was a bit much. I certainly liked the series though. And about the illegal dojinshi thing? Japan's got a certain system that makes dojin legal.
