Valkyria Chronicles episodes 4 - 10 yesterday and then today, 11 - 18.
Well, it got better... but... it's also more frustrating,
[spoiler]Isara died. ;_; I cried, a lot. That part where Rosie sings at her grave with Ramal really got to me. ;.; And why do i have the horrible feeling a lot more characters are doomed to die in this show? Plus, while I think Welkin has been acting like a jerk; Faldio is the bigger jerk. I hate that guy.[/spoiler]

Finished Valkyria Chronicles. It has a 'good' ending, but I felt that it should have been, and could have been, much better then it actually was.
I guess the writers and directors just couldn't decide what kind of show they wanted, a war/drama or a romance/drama. The mix of it just didn't work very well for me. It was basically by the end a 'lets kill a bunch of characters off just for the heck of it!' show. D<
I would have given this a 5/10 for the major headache/heartbreak it caused me, but since I ended up liking a few of the characters, I was actually enjoying myself watching episodes 12 - 22 (despite some things still seriously pissing me off) and
[spoiler]OMG! They actually let the main couple share a deep kiss that was longer then five seconds!!!
[/spoiler] I'll give it a 7/10.

Air Master
This is a show I've got a lot to say about because so many people could potentially feel so many different ways about it. I absolutely love Air Master, but I think a lot of people will only like it a bit, while others hate it. And they will be justified in these opinions because I think that, while it can be enjoyed to a degree by many, the show is really made for a subset of fandom that isn't as big in the U.S. as it is in Japan.
You will really, really dig Air Master if you really, really like, have lots of experience with or used to like all of the following:
- 2D fighting games, especially perennial franchises of Capcom and SNK such as Street Fighter and King of Fighters
- anime adaptations of these sorts of games, i.e. the Street Fighter movies, Fatal Fury OAVs, etc.
- pro wrestling, specifically Japanese and Mexican pro wrestling, though familiarity with late 90s WCW wrestling will do, as it heavily incorporated these influences
Knowledge of these things is necessary to get the most out of Air Master because it is both an homage to and a parody of them. If you don't know about or care about these things, you may want to skip the next few paragraphs and get to the part in which I touch on non-parody related stuff.
Characters are clearly tributes to various enduring personalities in Japan's favorite fighting game franchises. This sort of character can be a parody of a general archetype that many fighting game characters are based on, or they can be a near-exact replica of a specific character with everything from costume design to fighting pose and techniques modeled after them.
The middle of the series contains a wrestling arc in which the main character and her rival team up to compete in a series of tag team bouts. The match structure, the characters competing in the matches, the mic battles and the techniques employed by the combatants are all rooted in pro wrestling (which is hugely popular in Japan).
Here's an example: there's a character called the Lucha Master who is a shout out to Lucha Libre wrestling which comes from Mexico. This is what he looks like when he fights. Now, Lucha is pretty famous and would get mobbed if he walked around outside in his mask, so he can't do that. How does he go about solving this problem? Wear another mask OVER HIS FIGHTING MASK obviously. This way, no one will possibly know it is him. Wrestling fans will be able to fully appreciate this character.
The main character's posse also serves to poke fun at stock anime character types. There's Mina, whose breasts are far too large to be actually attractive; Renge, who eats all the time and has a super-obnoxious voice; and there's...who are the other two again?
Let me say that the jokes in Air Master can be appreciated as general silliness by pretty much anyone, so don't think it is impenetrable if you've never played KOF or seen a wrestling match. If this is you, you may very well like Air Master, even like it a lot, but you probably won't love it.
Air Master eschews anything like a conventional "plot" in favor of giving us both action and parody. This move itself is also part of the parody, as anyone who has tried to follow the story of fighting games can attest to. The ending especially is comedy gold for anyone who has ever beaten a King of Fighters game in single player mode. The premise of AM is simply this: Maki used to be this amazing gymnast, but she outgrew it. She turns to street fighting in order to recapture that thrill she felt while in gymnastic competition. Since she is trained in jumping, flipping, twirling, etc. she employs a lot of aerial techniques, earning her the name Air Master (Eh-uh MASTAH!)
In spite of the in-jokes and the lack of storyline, Air Master's BIG selling point is the action. This show boasts the [color="Red"]absolute best fighting animation and choreography[/color] of any show I've ever seen. Yup, bar none. I wouldn't say this lightly. The fights are animated extremely fluidly, and you can always tell what is going on, as they never skimp on making the action the center piece. No reused animation or cheap tricks used. Seeing this stuff in action serves you better than reading about it, so... here's the first fight in the show, to give you an idea of how good the animation/choreography can be.
So, yeah, the big draw of this show is to see street fighters kicking the crap out of each other in gorgeously animated fashion. If you like well-done action and can stand the lack of an overarching story driving the show forward, then you may want to give this show a look. If you're a wrestling and/or fighting game fan who also loves action and won't miss a plot, then you have to see this show.
I should also mention that Toei's video transfers and audio quality for the DVDs are really terrible, so the stream Funimation has up for it looks/sounds pretty bad. The fansubs are much better quality.

It only gets better. Next was my favorite season of the bunch as it had the most comedy in the series (which is where Slayers really shines.) I finished Kimi ni Todoke earlier this week. Wow...I loved every minute of it. As i have said before I really didn't know what to expect when I started my first Shoujo high school romance. I honestly didn't think I would love it so much but I did. It was beautiful depiction of love in all forms. It is not just romantic love but also the bond of love between friends. The character development in this show was great as each character was different than they were in the beginning. I love all of the characters and just everything about the show. I was worried that the ending was not going to live up to the rest of the series. Thankfully, I was wrong. I am very excited to see the second series and I am saddened that it is only 12 episodes, though. Still looking forward to it. 10/10

Natsume Yujincho eps 2-7. My sister and I are liking this a lot. It certainly doesn't move me to tears, but it's heartwarming and I like that about it. It's also a generally pretty anime.
I've picked up Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex on adultswim. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei is a pretty good gag show. There's some pretty hilarious jokes in here, a couple of b'aww moments, and some really nice music. If you've seen other Shinbo/Shaft comedies and liked them(Arakawa Under the Bridge, Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru), you should like this. If you're not into typical Shaft weirdness, this is not the show to win you over. I will say that the best part was when the X would flash before Fuura would talk HidaSketch-style.
Macross Zero is really, really bad. Now, I should start by saying I love Macross. I love Frontier, I love Do You Remember Love?, I love Plus. I love everything associated with Macross; the plane-robots, the music, the optimism, the ridiculously awesome moments, the dogfights, the love triangles, I dig all this stuff. I love the way Macross has continuity that affects the other series without making all of the shows a single narrative; ie the way the AI shenanigans in Plus are kind of what kick off the plot in Frontier. So keep in mind that this review comes from a fanboy.
Macross Zero really sucks. The characters are forgettable when they aren't irritating, the CG is really ugly, the dogfights are boring. You guys know how one of the most common complaints about Miyazaki is the force fed environmental message? This makes his movie look not subtle, but invisible with such a message. It is one step away from the characters looking at the screen and telling the audience that technology sucks and everyone should go back to living in tribal villages.
The real kicker? The music is absolute garbage. It is forgettable and I probably wouldn't be so hard on it except this is Macross! The entire franchise is about the power of Culture, which is represented by Song. Even on the rare occasions when there is singing, it is not Macross. Sara uses her magic songs to makes some (hilarious bad CG) flowers bloom and lift some rocks and fly a totem pole. Y'know what? Ranka stopped a friggin' rebellion with one song, and it wasn't even a magic song or anything. Minmay turned the tide of a war through one non-magic song! Your terrible music is completely irrelevant to the plot and missed the entire point of Macross.
This series is absolute garbage and I am going to have a hard time trusting the opinions of anyone who likes it. Watch Macross, watch Plus, watch Frontier, just don't watch this. The only good thing I can say about it is that when I get around to watching 7 it will seem like a masterpiece compared to this crap. Any series that can have Roy Fokker as a cast member and suck is truly awful.

Really? I remember thinking the pretty awesomely-animated dogfights were the one good thing about this show. But to each his own I guess.
I don't really remember much about the plot other than thinking it was sort of mediocre. Probably the most notable thing about it now is its tie-in to Frontier. It wouldn't be on my worst anime list, but it's certainly one of the lesser Macross entries. I think it was done when Kawamori was still on his "environmentalist" (also see Earth Maiden Arjuna) kick...so yeah...

I've started Spice and Wolf, seen episodes 1-5. I like this show, but I can't really say what exactly it is about it that's appealing. Also, I wish I could keep up with the economics stuff better. XD;;

Bunny Drop 3-5- Flipping adorable. I love it.
No. 6 3-5- For something that isn't shounen-ai, wow. It toes the line (though honestly, I don't mind.... except the melodramatic feelings of 'you're the only person that matters!' are WAY too sudden and early in the relationship.... except it's not shounen-si, so what relationship? xD )
Steins;Gate 1-19- I played catch-up with this one. I don't see how people could watch it from week to week- this is a series meant to be marathoned. I would have died at some of the cliffhangers this left me. Good series, though.

Imagawa's Tetsujin 28 movie (Tetsujin 28: Lingering Midday Moon, or something along those lines) got subtitles. It's pretty much a stand-alone story, which is good because all I know about the various Tetsujin 28 titles is the basic premise.
I thought it was quite decent -- much more an elegaic post-war mystery than a full-blown action story. Also, Norio Wakamoto has a role.

Princess Tutu - Episode 1:

2) Prince Mytho reminds me of Yuki Sohma (Soft voice, sad face, withdrawn personality, called a "prince", etc...)
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Episodes ??? to 52:
1) I caught up to all the English dubbed episodes FUNimation aired on YouTube.
2) [spoiler] "The Promised Day" sounds a lot like Avatar: The Last Airbender's "Day of Black Sun" with the solar eclipse. 'Cept the antagonists are utilizing it and not the protagonists. [/spoiler]

I know! I for one am always quick to gently caress the face of ALL my friends.
In other news, I just caught episode 5 of Usagi Drop, and I just LOVE this show. This is coming from a guy who doesn't really watch a whole lot of slice of life anime.
[spoiler] I especially love how they handled Rin's mother......You could almost sympathize with her, I mean just by looking at her you can tell she had Rin at a very young age and she has a lot of work to balance[/spoiler]

I'm surprised you say that, because I remember hearing Imagawa himself say that he didn't think the movie was very good. Also, No. 6 is on the verge of being dropped for how ridiculous the yaoi-subtext is getting. I'm not going to drop a series because people are into slash but I think like half of episode five was there to be fujoshi bait.
