Princess Tutu
I haven't seen a single episode, but I really like the idea and was won over to this anime by this video: http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=tHZqxecCukg. It has a lot of spoilers in it, but it'a very good and made me want to buy the anime, which is now reserved for me at a local store. XD

Otehr than that, I can't think of anything else underrated.

I'm really now sure if Baccano is unknown to anime fans. I have talk to a good number of fans and Baccano always comes up as a series they like.

One that I think is underrated are Macross Zero and Macross F.

Aria. It's a really sweet, relaxing slice-of-life series... Haven't seen all that much of it yet, but I like what I've seen and I'm in love with the manga.

I would say Gadguard is a good example. It's sort of like Digimon or Pokemon, but with giant robots instead of cute animals. They come in cubes and when they come out, they are operated by their owner's will. It's made by Studio Gonzo, and it aired on G4TechTV's way-too-short-lived Anime Unleashed block.

Paniponi Dash is criminally underrated. I <3 crazy comedy and PPD delivers. Also, another underrated anime is the movie Brave Story. I just watched it and wow, it's a great adventure film. Sad to say, there's no American release planned. And Utawarerumono is also unknown, although it's based on a dating sim it doesn't suck.

Saint Tail is way too unknown... It is, after all, the best anime of its genre (in my humble opinion, of course).

Now And Then, Here And There. One of the best dramatic series ever IMHO. I second Monster. Nadesico, though legendary is largely unknown yet totally rad. Last Exile barely makes the list. I'll post more as I remember them, oh yeah, I also second Baccano!

Heck yes! I wish I could find this series. I haven't seen it since it was on Toonami.

Here's some obscurity for ya: World Masterpiece Theater!

I've been trying to find some of those series for a long time, and The Trapp Family Story (yes, THAT Trapp family) really piqued my interest. I actually found a bit of it and have been watching it. It's pretty cute so far, but I have a sinking feeling I'll never get to finish it because only 15 of the 40 episodes are available at present.

I also found the Anne of Green Gables series (Akage no An) from 1979! This one is quite a bit slower-paced than I was expecting, but it's nice to have anyway. The animation quality is quite nice; much better than most TV series from that time.

Lastly, I found one of them called Alps Story: My Annette. I was interested in this series for two reasons: my name is Annette and it started its run exactly one month before I was born (it started on January 9, 1983 and I was born February 9, 1983). Kinda creepy! Didn't think I'd ever find this one! The only problem is there are no subtitles, so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to get out of it, haha. >_>

I got another one-- Muteki Koujin Daitarn 3! I bet nobody's heard of that. My fiance and I are working on subbing it. It's really old and has zero chance of getting licensed, lol. Next on our list after we finish Daitarn 3 is Trider G7, which looks like a heck of a lot of fun.

Looks like our tastes in anime is in the "mere niche audience". Not that I complain (as much as before), but it kinda makes me feel kinda lonely and unwanted, even in the anime fandom. But that's the way things are.

Hope the sub turns out fine.

Yeah, I know there are other fans of old stuff out there, but they don't seem to want to talk much, since all the forums I've found on the subject are pretty much dead. :\ I feel marginalized, lol.

Thanks! The subbing has been...going slow. Timing it is a real pain, and then my husband is going to be gone for four months, so it'll be a while before we can really think about releasing it.

Lots of titles on here I would second (Kaleido Star--which is one of my favorites, Air, Princess Tutu, Tenshi ni Narumon, St. Tail), but the one I'm going to nominate is 2x2 Shinobu. I had never heard of it until my boyfriend and I plowed through it in one weekend, and I've never heard anyone else mention it since. It was like a freak accident only we knew about or something.

Anyway, it's a wonderfully hilarious Ninja parody that had us absolutely crying in laughter at almost every turn. Probably, in my opinion, the best comedy I've ever seen.

I would also say Twelve Kingdoms and Eureka seveN are fairly underrated/unknown. Most people I talk to haven't seen either.

I agree with several that have been mentioned so far, but I don't think any of these were posted yet...

Lovely Complex(a few people I talk with know this one, but I don't hear anything about it from many other anime fans. It may be popular for all I know), Gunparade March, Night Wizard, The Galaxy Railways and xxxHolic.

I've seen part of Gunparade March. It was...okay. Needed more mecha action. XD

I've also seen a couple of episodes of Arjuna and it kinda made me want to throw things. >_>

Yeah, it was lacking in the action department, but I enjoyed the series for some reason. I heard there was a related show done with a different cast, but it turned out pretty awful or something... but haven't seen it to judge for myself. I think it was called Gunparade Orchestra.

I think that Arjuna is WAY to preachy, but it still had amazingly compelling pacing and tone to it.

I really liked the sound and some of the acting in Arjuna (the dub), but I just couldn't finish it. Some of the characters irritated me too much and like you said, WAY too preachy.

I haven't heard anyone mention anything about the anime "Here is Greenwood". I found an old school VHS tape with two episodes on it, and it's a pretty good series!

Strawberry Marshmallow (...like why doesn't everybody know about this show?! ^__~), Kamichu!, Someday's Dreamers, Rumiko Takahashi Anthology, Niea Under 7, Toward The Terra, RG Veda (OVA), and Chance Pop Session. Also, the already mentioned "Princess Tutu". That is such an awesome anime.

I'm also going to add: Galaxy Angel. Every time I bring up that title no one knows what the heck I'm talking about!

Hnn, I wouldn't say Eureka seveN is too unknown... Of course, that might just be my own circle of anime-fan friends, too - the reason why I watched it was because almost everyone I knew had seen it and told me it was a masterpiece, so of course I had to check it out. x33 I wasn't disappointed.

Judging from what I've seen online, though, it's true that it doesn't seem to have much of a fandom (although, admittedly, some very popular series just don't attract much fanwork following for some reason.)
