Newtype USA to Cease Publication

The real heart of CAA; discuss specific series, issues, and things related to anime here.

Yeah, Otaku USA has the problem most (non-web-based) American anime publications struggle with: they don't have enough connections to adequately cover anything that's not about to be released in English, at least not early enough to get it published before it's out. That's one of Newtype's few plus points (and it stands to reason that PiQ won't have it once the Kadokawa Shoten connection is gone)

I guess I don't see why this is such a huge thing, at least for me. There's more anime than I will ever watch in my life time, so if I find out about a title after it's been out for a few weeks or even months, it's not going to have a major impact on me. Now that I think about it, perhaps this is something akin to the "early adopters" ideology...

Otaku USA flouts their America-centricity, and that's fine for some people, but that's just not for me. Half of my fandom isn't even in the States (Taiwan and Japan) anyway. Lots of my favorite anime haven't and possibly never will make it to the States, and at the same time, I like getting posters and pictures and articles of anime I'm watching ATM. Newtype used to provide, so I'm sad I won't get a mag anymore.

Man, and I had just been thinking about subscribing to NewType! Ah well, I guess I'll just have to buy the new issues as they come out and check out their new PiQ. I also really hope that the new one has a preview DVD, because those have had some great series on them, and clued me into some very interesting series *Cough* Rozen Maiden! *cough, cough*

I can stay this now.

There is no way that PIQ will have a preview DVD in them.

Reported on ANN

ANN wrote:Editorial Director Gary Steinman Leaves ADV's PiQ Mag

Gary Steinman, the publisher and editorial director of A.D. Vision's upcoming PiQ Magazine, has notified people via email that he is leaving the company today. Steinman has been working on the launch of this magazine about "anime, manga, video games, comics, movies, TV" and other topics, and the launch is officially still on track for March. He also led PiQ's predecessor, Newtype USA, as its editor-in-chief until its last issue this past month. A.D. Vision has not yet announced the new head of PiQ Magazine.

Well its more clear now, but he left because of personal reasons.

Gary Steinman sent this statement to ANN.

Just to clarify, I am leaving for personal reasons. I had planned to return to the Bay Area for quite a while now. Although I'm not from San Francisco, I lived there for a few years and always wanted to return. It's where I plan to raise my family and live for years to come.

I didn't want to announce my departure sooner because I didn't want anything to get in the way of PiQ's launch. We just got the proofs in today for the first issue, and it looks fantastic! I am proud of what this team accomplished, and I'm sure the readers will enjoy it a great deal.

The team remains intact, and the company is actively searching for a replacement. Meanwhile, Kevin Gifford remains the Executive Editor and he will certainly do a superb job continuing PiQ. The rest of the team is likewise eager to continue providing the best coverage of anime and manga, alongside other areas of relevant entertainment.

The first issue of PiQ hits newsstands in mid-March. Look for great feature coverage and reviews of titles including Code Geass, xxxHOLiC, Tweeny Witches, Aquarion and much more! We also have a 16-page preview of the upcoming Crayon Shin-chan manga from CMX. Very cool.

Steinman also emphasized that, despite a mention in the early cover mockup, the Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! program will not be featured in PiQ's first issue.

So basically he just wants to sit at the dock of the Bay...and watch the tide roll away...

He just wants to sit on the dock of the bay...and waste time...tiii-iiime...

(First person who guesses what song this is gets a 1-Up Mushroom of Win.)

Anyway, I thought Feb's issue was the last issue of Newtype?

Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding.

I think its March issue that will be the last one for Newtype. Which it should come out in the later part of Feb.

Oh, because I read at the ending of the Feb issue, in very small print, that that was the last issue.

Darn it! And here I was getting all sentimental over Feb's issue of Newtype USA! And I went somewhat gentle on the last review I did!

I remember a few years back ADV had a "sale" on Newtype subscriptions, "only" $72 for the year. I subscribed for that year, but didn't find I read enough of it to justify the expense. I'd like it if Piq is a bit more PG than Newtype sometimes was.

Well, animedude90 said the he saw that it would be the last issue. I don't have it, so look for the small print. Really, people didn't know if it would the Feb or March issue that would be the last one at the time that this news was release.

the February 2008 issue (January shipping), 65 issues will have been printed, 66 if the final issue is the March issue (shipping in February).

That was the last thing that ANN reported about it as, they didn't know which would be the last issue.

This is the first sentance of the last paragraph in newtype's Feb. issue.

"We've...we've just recieved word that this is the last issue of Newtype USA magazine."

Well now we get the PIQ now. Oh well, I really had a mix feelings about Newtype USA and really. But I hate to see Newtype USA go, but I also didn't want ADV to keep it and let it get in the way of saving money and their self in the long run.

I wonder if any other anime producer will pick up the Japanese license. Viz already has its own magazines, so who else is there?
