It's official: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-08-20/new-fullmetal-alchemist-tv-anime-series-confirmed

The wraparound jacket band on the 20th volume of Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist manga will confirm on Friday that a new television anime series is in the works.

So, let the celebrating/speculation begin. Will it be continuing on from Germany? Other rumours say that it'll be a remake that will actually follow the manga storyline this time.

I'm one of the few who has never finished the anime or caught up with the manga, so to me it's funny to see people argue about this. On one hand you have the diehard anime fans who have either never read the manga or hate it, and on the other hand you have people who think the anime sucks big time. So either way, this new series is going to **** somebody off. XD

It better be a remake. I would be highly disappointed if they tried to go on from Shamballa, and even further off course from the original storyline.

BONES is going to run into problems no matter how they cut it. The criminally short FullMetal Alchemist OVA collection basically confirms that Ed and Al stay on Earth for the rest of their lives. There's still unexplored territory back on the Alchemist's side with Roy and company, but that's largely wrapping things up, and would feel like a derivative work.

Our best bet is a series reboot faithful to Hiromu Arakawa's Manga, but then we'll have several strangely familiar episodes right off the bat before things actually get different, possibly ten, arguably twenty depending on how they pace it. Even if they get to fresh material after all that, ten or twenty episodes is a lot to watch a second time on a different TV with a different timeslot.

They could also film a prequel, which would be terrible beyond words.

I will maintain a cautious enthusiasm until we learn more.

I'm not completely sure what to think of this. F&C basically stated what I was thinking myself.

Definitely more than ten. I'd argue it might be more than twenty. From what I remember, the anime was largely the same as the manga for 30 episodes or so(or at least it was close enough that it would largely feel like repetition), excepting a few filler episodes and some rearranged events..but that could probably be streamlined down some if they handled it right.

It seems more likely that this will be like the Hellsing OVA, following the manga completely (and hopefully with a similar level of methodical quality). One can hope, at least.

The entire arc with Greed could definitely be streamlined. This was the point where I started to dislike the anime, because it took a very concise and effective series of events and strung them out over an unnecessarily long period of time.

I predict that Hagane 2 will chronicle the adventures of Ed and Winry's daughter, Crystalia-Amethyst-Marie, who, empowered by relentless charm, wit, and beauty, becomes the new Fullmetal Alchemist at 11, fights evil, saves the world, and wins the affections of the cold but handsome son of Roy Mustang.

The other part of the rumor of Hagane 2 was that BONES was making Darker than BLACK 2. Now THAT I actually care to see. Because it could actually WORK. (except all the awesome characters are dead, but details, details.)

I, for one, am thoroughly excited. The previous anime was great in terms of excitement and animation and voice acting and all that, but I really really hate the ending. (I was depressed for a week, and I'm not even exaggerating.) I don't see how they can make a series continuing after Conqueror of Shamballa; that storyline is pretty much wrapped up if you ask me.

Thus, I'm hoping they'll be sticking more closely to the manga. Though it's true they'd have to spend 25 episodes or so of the same stuff, I think it could be really cool. And who knows; they might condense all that to just sort of summarize events or something. I'm hoping they'll put in some of my favorite scenes and arcs from the manga, like inside Gluttony and Hohenheim's past, and have some of the manga-exclusive characters like Olivier and Ling and Mei.

But whatever they do with this new series, I am very excited about it and can't wait to see it! I mean...come on! It's FMA.

Have there been any other manga-based series with two anime series?

FMA's Anime adaption dragged out a couple chapters into extra episodes, not including inexcusably early filler. I have always felt the Church of Leto would be more succinct in a single episode, and some arcs were stretched into extra episodes. With the right pacing, I could cut down the Anime's first 30ish episodes into the low 20s.

However, that's still an entire season's worth of rehashed material.

I never read the manga, but I did see the anime (and the movie) which I thought had an interesting story,a bit scary and violent a times, but overall good anime.
Anyway,a new season of FMA seems interesting, though like others have said before, they'll most likely have twenty repeat episodes from the last serises. Maybe not, who knows?
We'll just have to wait and see what they come up with.

Hellsing has had two and was in a very similar situation to FMA, Hellsing the series and now Hellsing the OVA.

Shippuden is a time-skip continuation of Kishimoto's Manga. Hellsing Ultimate and FullMetal Alchemist 2 are unique in the field of re-adapted Manga, I'm fairly sure.

Right now, the rumor is that it will be just be another season of FMA.

I hope that its wrong and we will get FMA series that follows the manga completely.

Halfway excited, halfway dissapointed. I hated the series ending, but it did wrap things up. I'm interested in what they're going to do with it, and I hope its either a spin-off or series reboots, no way it should be another season. What're they gonna do? Ed and Al's Adventures on Earth? <_<

So Im too curious about this. I actually liked the endings, but I wonder what they will do next.

Im not into spin-offs though. Who knows what will happen. All I can say is I hope that it ends up being good.

Let's not say anything bad about it untill we see it, you guys. Because I mean FMA was great, now we're criticizing that it's a bad move to add more story? We don't even know what in the world they are going to do with it or what direction that they are going to take it in. Weren't the creators of the manga and anime great in the way they showed a different kind of manga/anime? To me it was far different than others that I have seen and it did well in entertaining me for about a year. Now let's just wait untill we all see it, and then judge.

This should be a positive, christian forum.

yeah FMA is unique when it comes it to the two different mediums (or should I say two different stories...) The first anime really milks the term based on the manga for all that it's worth. :)

Because there is not a lot you can add without calling a number of different Anime materials non-canonical. Love it or leave it, the story was largely wrapped up in episode 51 and the film. That's closure. Tacking on new seasons and marketing promotions after that is basically milking it dry. FullMetal Alchemist was never a hit-and-run plot]Weren't the creators of the manga and anime great in the way they showed a different kind of manga/anime?
Hiromu Arakawa is actually fairly vocal about her decision to have the Anime be different from the source Manga, and though I can understand and respect this, that doesn't excuse what I feel BONES did wrong, though they handled some things better.

Here's a thought I had last week while watching the first series (in anime club). What if they set this new season during the "timeskip" that occured in between Ed becoming an alchemist and the events of the main story. Wasn't it like a three year gap?

Honestly, I found the non-manga material to be acceptable, which is more than I can say for other popular series. The only part which really made shake my head (literally) was the very, very last bit with them on the other side of the gate.

No I meant that we shouldn't be negative about this untill something is made. That means untill you know the content of the manga/anime that's made, we can't really say too much untill it's made. It could very well be for milking it, Im not saying that that probably won't happen. Im just saying wait and see, then judge.

Im just following the anime, so Im not really concerned except if the new season or whatever it is contradicts what was made in the seasons before it. This is my opinion because if I read the manga, then Id be concerned if it was cannonical. (Ive read books that I really liked, but when I saw the movie versions of it Id be really disappointed because they may add or take something out.) If this is what you guys mean, then I have respect for that.

I personally hope it's more of the same, because I much prefer the anime version of my favorite character, Envy. I know that's a little selfish, but what can I say? I like the idea.

Also, Wrath is not the same person in the manga. Whenever I read it, I miss the little ruffian.

Well, that's my two cents. XD

i'm currently watching FMA right now, and i've read a bit of the manga. so i'm confused. what good is making a second season of FMA going to do, just because it'll be totally re-made and more close to the original storyline. i mean, i've compared a lot of the show to the manga and all they did in the show is switch a few things around....maybe it's just me but i think that the original FMA is as close to the manga as they could without giving the manga readers a reason to be bored with the show.

and besides, if those hard-core manga readers out there really hated the show...they had the right to not watch it. no one said they had to watch it and critique it.

The problem is, the series ended, before the manga did. So, there is no way that its close to the manga at all.

The manga just ended in Japan and I have read a little as of what is out there of the manga that hasn't been release here and the series goes off from what the manga story by the time Greed showed up.

I still like anime series, but it could have been better and I was and still hope that next FMA series would be very close to the manga.

One thing that has really bug me was the switch of Pride and Wrath. If you think about it, Wrath fits better as some starting wars and so on and not
Pride being the head of an army.
No one said they couldn't watch and critique it either. If all you mean to say is that people shouldn't act as though their rights have been infringed when a series has changed, that's fine. But it isn't helpful to just tell people "If you don't like it, don't watch it."

As far as I know, the manga is still ongoing. The 88th chapter came out earlier this week. That or someone is perpetuating an extremely masterful fraud.
