Heck, I'm sure we could find dark, mature themes in Spongebob Squarepants and Dora the Explorer if we REALLY WANTED TO.

In a world in which people point at Beyblade as "teh suck" and point at DragonballZ and Sailor Moon as "the antithesis of teh suck," I'm sure it's not impossible.

Because I'm in a good mood today, I'll try to take that in the least scathing way possible.

This is an excellent example of what I'm bat at. Most people would agree Disney films are for children, Hunchback of Notre Dame falling squarely in that category. And here we have the movies central antagonist, Judge Frollo, in his defining performance. He confesses to saint Mary his lust after the gypsy Esmeralda, which both contradicts his position in the Roman Catholic Church as well as his blatant racism earlier in the movie directed towards the gypsy population of Paris. He argues back and forth between seeking redemption and justifying his actions, even going as far to blame God for his current predicament. Eventually he snaps, and decides to pursue Esmeralda, damning her to Hell if she refuses him.

I kid.

I was childishly trying to get back at you for the whole "elitist overinterpreting manga lolwut" attitude you pulled on me on numerous occasions.

Just saying.

Well played, Mina. Well played.

Though I tended more to poke fun at your Death Note obsession than your interpretive tendencies.

I don't know about how other people see her, but based on what I have seen in YGO, she's not at all overbearing and pushy (or skanky), and is HANDS-ON on the game(sad that she never got a chance to play in a major duel though), unlike other female tag-along characters of the said genre; all they do is sit in the sidelines and either stoke the main charas ego or drive them nuts with their whining and/or nagging/physical abusiveness.

On darkness in Disney flicks: Maybe it depends on how one sees darkness; I do agree that kids need to see some decidedly dark "facts-of-life"; however, what I actually fear is for Disney to tread the level of "mature-level" darkness. I mean, I've seen enough of people wanting to annihilate/harm each other for unreasonable and/or twisted reasons; in anime or in any other so called "mature audience" shows.

And BTW, it's not only once that I heard people castigating Disney for "taming down" and even "dumbing down" decidedly mature-themed stuff (like Greek mythos in "Hercules" and yes,Hugo's "Hunchback of Notre Dame") just to fit the targeted younger audience.

Sorry if I'm making rather disjointed statements. I'm not really good at piecing my words together at discussions like this.

[quote="Fish and Chips (post: 1217786)"]Actually, they've been peanut butter and jelly for some time. It's only more recently with their removal that Disney films have gone downhill. A couple titles are lighter material than others, but still.

The Lion King has betrayal and misplaced guilt, and Beauty and the Beast shows issues with vanity, deception, self-aggrandizement among others]

And the irony of all that:

Don Bluth pitched The Secret of NIMH to Disney, who he and Gary Goldman were employess of at the time.

Disney rejected it because it was too dark for them.

That's informative, I suppose. There are certainly people who dislike her for a variety of random reasons. As you noted, however, she doesn't participate in any major duels... which means she spends most of her time on the sidelines.

Since I'm posting, I have to comment on this. He falls and somehow manages to entangle himself in vines. This is a ridiculously contrived way to allow the audience's hatred at the antagonist to be sated by his death without soiling their protagonist with killing.

I agree with you that Disney isn't all sunshine and happiness. That doesn't mean I like them.

I don't think I have enough fingers to count the number of Disney villains that have led to their own deaths. Still, strangling is a cut above simply falling into oblivion or some such obscured end.

How is Naruto lately?

Meh, animation's my hobby. I enjoy it.

I think Roy Mustang only likes anime where people get killed in the second act.

Seriously though I did enjoy Beyblades when it was on Toon Disney,it was a rather fun series to watch. That and Shinzo and Digimon seem to be the main anime on Toon Disney.
