Post minimum character limit

I've been seeing this around forums for a long time, and it seems to be a good idea to encourage thought-out and clear posts... Character limits! What this does is prevents a user from making a post if his message is under X characters long. X can be anything from 10 to 25 (could be longer, but that's pushing it a bit).

So, any ideas?

I'm not sure I like that idea. Sometimes one can say alot in just a few words.

I dislike the idea, as sometimes short posts are indeed necessary (e.g. when confirming a fact).

IMO, creating a character limit could easily simply cause many posts to become very full of fluff (as the writers would be struggling to meet the character limit) and do very little for the actual nature of the material being written. And, like was said, sometimes one can say a lot in just a few words.

An interesting idea. I think we should remember this should the boards ever become excessively burdened with trivial response posts.

We do have some sort of character limit, I think. It's a fairly large one though.

Oh wait. You meant a MINIMUM character limit. Not a maximum. Hmm. Not too sure I'd like that idea. Doesn't seem necessary right now.

There *IS* a minimal post count. It's ZERO. If you post something that's zero or less characters, it will deny it. We have considered this in the past, but never really found a reason to impliment it. Most places I've seen it haven't really shown substantial improvement in post content, and implementing it can't be done on a per forum basis. That means we have to add it everywhere - including goof-off and the picture threads.

I was fairly certain someone would try it.

It's funny because it's the very next post. I should have turned off the signature, though.

It's not too late, Kali. Just quick edit and uncheck enable signatures.

Regarding the original point, I disagree. Sure, page after page of "LOL" would be tiresome, but someone would step in, even if only with a "ROFL"

Yeah, but it would display the last edited line, which would rather defeat the purpose.

Welll.... I go to another forum who does this but don't realy do that... lol
The only reson they do it is because they are running out of space and memory on the site so they have to keep everything to mimon so they ask people to not post one work posts or things like,
RLY, r u n2 dat stuf???(lol), or stuff considerd 'lazy posting' or stuff that doesn't make a full sentence or has to many question marks or exsclamation marks.
People keep this rule (except with lol. lol) but it's very... strict... It's not as much fun as it was before.
I sometimes just come here to get away from it. lol
But if you want that rule with out any reason I think you should think about it first because it feels like you lost some of your freedom when you get it and if y'all are ginna have a rule like mimon words 10 then I'm probly not ginna post much because I can't think under stresss!!! lol

Some people don't LIKE to think out well-though out, intelligent replies. It's hard for those who aren't intelligent. *points to self* And I agree with the added unnecessary fluff to fill the void. Sometimes, there's just nothing more to say.

Boy, you guys are well-blessed with a zero-character limit -- at Anime Angels it's a two-character limit. (Now it makes me wonder what it is at Guiding Her Travels... ^_^ *runs off to test it out* )

[Edit: It's two characters at GHT also.]

Woah! It really does work! I just thought kali made a post, then edited it to show nothing. Till I tried it myself by hitting the "quick reply" button.

Another forum I'm on had a 20 character limit, but someone discovered how to get around it:

All the same, I'm deleting your blank post. It's already been done once, so more are unnecessary.

You know, MSP, you could have edited your comment into the blank post...

*edit* Blast, that's what I get for opening all of the interesting threads at once and going through them sequentially. Beaten to the punch. Well, at least I have >0 characters in this post... */edit*

He meant that you could have edited the comment you made after your blank post, into your blank post. Instead of double posting.
