Red scare? Red scare? Ah! The Communists are attacking! Man the battleships! Get to the heavy artillary! Tanks! We need lots of tanks! Anyone who's wearing a vaguely Russian hat must be taken into captivity!

What could you people possibly mean by all this? I mean, not like people get unbalanced about issues or anything.

Hm. That is a bit scary. I've noticed that almost all the time recently we've had a large number of guests on board.

I believe they were Google-bots...they scan the board for their search engine. Kinda freaky to see all those guest but if you look at the IP addresses (we can't, but mods can) you'd probally see they all have very similar IPs and they move around the site quickly. If I'm right there shouldn't be a need to worry about it, but I'm known to be incorrect. lol

This seems to be endless! Isn't there something we can do to put a stop to all the trolling, like legally-especially since most of these trolls originate from one place?

Yeah I saw that many guests browsing at a time. Most of them look at the archives so I dunno.

Anyway, I think the admins here are just grand. Atleast we don't have as much banning as Otakuboards did, that was just a lot. I must say you give much better reasons to ban people as well. That is another good thing.

I just think this forum is one of the best modded, and best ever, hands down. I think I am going to enjoy my stay here very well.

Calling dj: <META> tags, man! Get the crawlers off the forum, let them maybe crawl the title page and the list of forums/welcome mat. That would cut down on the number of phantom guests.

i.e., on /forums/, have <meta name="robots" content="index,nofollow">

robots.txt might be even better:

Disallow: /forums/

No, because the main page will still be indexed, just none of the forums beneath it.

Shooraijin makes good sense here. What he's saying is put protection on the forum thread information to prevent it from being tagged by index bots, keeping guests from freely scanning content and jumping directly there without authentication via the main page.

That latter part - authentication, I'm not sure if that's how it's set up here (I registered as soon as I came in before checking forums) but if it is, then what shooraijin suggests will help plug one hole that some trolls are getting through by.

that's my 3 yen. ;2)

Authentication is accomplished through cookies, so, unfortunately, trolls are likely entering through (technically speaking) legit channels where they must provide a real username and password -- at least those who post. Those who lurk, of course, can always be guest.

What this will cut down on is "phantom" guests from web bots that blindly follow all links. I remember Shiroi one day telling me about one particular bot (an IP trace revealed it to be Inktomi) that was hitting all the 'Report Post' and 'IP: Logged' links at the bottom of all the posts, and to add insult to injury, we were able to track four separate instances of the robot (possibly more, but we just saw four IP addresses from the same netblock) doing the same thing simultaneously on multiple different areas. That really makes it hard to track activity, and is unnecessary CPU burden on this server (which really seems to have points of time during the day when access is just glacial).

Once the noise from legitimate, if misguided, automatic web crawlers is filtered out by telling them to stay away, we can then respect any guest count out there as a more reliable figure of how much lurking activity from outsiders there is, and see if that correlates with increases in troll appearances.

Trolls, grr :mutter: I had the misfortune of reading some of this one's posts because the e-mail notifications don't show edits.

Anyway, what is with all the idiots online lately? Someone's going around fanfiction.net plagarizing other people's work (posting it as if it were their own), these trolls are coming back. . .did a bunch of people who were dropped by their ISPs get amnesty or something? ;)
