Alright. Stop. The kid wrote this when he was just 15?!?!?!?! Hot dog. Better get cracking all you wanna-be writers out there.

Hair pulling about that aside; what did you all think of this Star Wars-meets-LotR story? I liked it; it was a good twist on some old ideas from the fantasy genre (c'mon, you've gotta give him props on that, in the fantasy genre about every thing has been done before be someone, orignals are really hard to find...)

The next book in the series comes out in August 2005 Can't wait.

And to clear up some confusion about the book club:
a) More the merrier. You don't have to be a member to join in the talks here in the threads.
b) We all read one book a month, and then at the end of the month we get together and talk about it. Simple. (So far we've read the Hobbit, The Princess Bride and now, Eragon).
c) You can either find the title of the next month's book in my siggy or in the last month's thread. Last month was kinda odd, and I must apologize for it. Breaking one's arm kinda puts a damper on the madd typing skills.

Eragon is a good book - maybe too much of a Tolkien rip off, but it still has pounds more imagination than most books. I'm not sorry I read it - in fact I'd like to read it again because I liked it so much.

I started reading that book along time ago but could never get through it...I'll have to try again sometime!

i tried reading it a year or two before and couldn't get through the first two chapters. when i tried it again, and forced myself through those first few chapters, it really took off, and i enjoyed it quite a bit. i was also impressed with the artwork in the front of the book, that the author did himself. i found the book also somewhat similar to Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern books. all in all, i enjoyed the book quite a bit, and am looking forward to the next two books in the trilogy.

Don't get me wrong though it is a very good book and I would recomend it!
I am going to force myself to read it over the summer when I have more time!

I like to write, and I'm homeschooled, and I'm young, so I read Eragon to "size up the competition", so to speak. ^_^ I have to say I was impressed. The accusations of "it's a Star Wars clone" are problematic, but Star Wars has a plotline that uses very common elements, so many works are 'clones' of it in a way. I'll read the next book when it comes out, of course.

Was anyone offended by the prolific magic content? I wasn't, but I was wondering if this was a problem for others.

Yes, I found that I highly enjoyed this book. I'm a bit of a writer myself so this book inspired me.
To your question, Pally, It never bothered me. I thought that it was really cool how it takes energy to use the magic.

I thought it was humorous how the magic system of Eragon seems to be inspired by RPGs and the like. I almost expected them to start talking about Spell Points.

I know, wasn't that awesome? I did the exact same thing.

January’s book of the month is going to be The Outsiders by SE Hilton. It’s pretty gritty and retro, but it is really good. And it is waaaaaaaay shorter then Eragon at about 150 pages.

Hmmm.... Themes everywhere. Books written by young people, and young people calling me Pally.

Eragon was interesting for the most part, but ridiculously generic in fantasy terms. Its amazing that he somehow wrote it in such a way that it was enjoyable, if not original. Huge homages to Lord of the Rings and Anne McAffrey's stuff, but for a 17 year old to get his book published, its pretty good.

And to get a deal for two other books as well...

I wonder if he is getting much money off of this whole thing? "Filthy rich", possibly?

Yes, very rich. Eragon wasn't really a very interesting character, but I thought Brom was and Saphira was alright.

Ironic how the main character is the most boring, eh? I agree with you...

Brom *was* like an Obi Wan Kenobi/Gandalf hybrid...but he was still one of the better members of the cast.

I was intreagued by this book because almost nothing is new, and yet he gives everything a fresh twist which makes it very enjoyable to read.

I was a little disturbed by the magic in it, and also that in the beginning of the book Brom steals somebodys money and justifies it.
I have my own personal theories on Eregons parantage and will post them as soon as I figure out how to work the spoiler code.

It's hard to rate Eragon. In some ways, it was SO generic, and I found that one chick's fortune-telling to be such an obvious give-away to later events. And about Eragon's parentage:

But on the other hand, it was an awesome book, and I can't wait to read Eldest.

I have read both Eragon and Eldest and me and my best friend have many theories that were proven and many more theories in the making. We are crossing our finger that the next Dragon rider will be Roran. Funny thing, I liked Roran from day one. Eragon isn't 'boring' persay, more like he is a normal guy personality wise. We all can identify with him in some way. My favorite character, besides Roran, is Angela. I love the fact that she was trying to prove a Toad is a Frog so witches couldn't use them. The fortune telling creeped me out a bit, but no more than the elves beliefs (shown in Eldest) annoyed me.

What color Dragon do you think will be on the next cover? So far we have a blue and red one. I think the next one will either be green, or the evil black dragon of Galbatorax(sp?)

Yeah. Apparently, it's the "it" book right now. I found out it was popular when I found the 39 person long waiting list for "Eldest".
If you're looking for a good story then it'll do the job. If you're looking for new ideas to fill your imagination, look elsewhere. It's basically an index of fantasy.
