Anyone read the books that these movies were made out of?

I have been on a crusade lately to read the book of every movieI've ever seen. It is very interesting to see what has been changed from book to movie, and most of the time the books are actually better.

Enough with explanations, here's the list:

Jungle Books 1 and 2
The Sheep-Pig (basis for the movie Babe)
Seabiscuit
101 Dalmations (yes, that was a book)
Princess Bride (Liked the movie better. They diss God in the book.)

If anybody else has book-movies to share, I'd love to hear about them. ;) ;)

That's going to be a long list.

Here's a few though (no I'm not even going try listing all that I know of)

The English Patient- by Michael Ondaatje
The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip K. D i c k
Enemy at the Gates by Some Guy
The Name of the Rose by Umberto Ecco

etc, etc
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

fun topic, something that people could go on for quite a while, listing books, lol.

here is the list of movies i have watched of books i have read, that i can remember off the top of my head.

-since almost all of Disney's animated movies are from books (or at least fairy tale stories) (never mind the fact that Disney manages to change, sometimes radically, the original story... that's a soapbox for another day, lol):
Cinderella
Beauty and the Beast
Snow White
Sleeping Beauty
101 Dalmations (my 4th grade teacher read it in class)
Tarzan (the books are SO much better than the movies
The Jungle Book
Alice in Wonderland
Peter Pan
The Great Mouse Detective (not taken from an exact book, but based on a series of books)

-some others include:
The Secret Garden
The Black Stallion
Black Beauty
Treasure Island
Great Expectations
The Man in the Iron Mask (if you liked the Leonardo DiCaprio movie, you might not like the book... the book is horribly depressing if you are expecting the movie)
The Chronicles of Narnia (and i am still waiting for a well done version of the series... *sigh*)
The Princess Bride
The Lord of the Rings
Joan of Arc (version by Mark Twain)
Adventures of Tom Sawyer

-and if you're counting plays:
MacBeth
Romeo & Juliet
The Merchant of Venice
Hamlet
-Sara-

speaking of both disney and the chronicles of narnia, i heard through a christian magazine (i believe it was charisma) that the disney company is going to be involved in the production of the chronicles of narnia, starting with the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe, from what i read, which was like back in august, they're expecting a release date around christmas 2005, it's supposed to be a live action movie and i'd also heard that they were planning vidoe games, figures, and all that merchandise that comes along with being a disney movie, the guy that's actually in charge of making the movie is a believer from what i understand, so hopefully disney wont mess things up for us, just a heads up, the time to wait is over

How about "Do androids dream of electric sheep?" which became "Blade Runner" starring Harrison Ford.

"Dune" which was an infinately better book. In fact, I can only stand the movie if I take them as different storries altogether.

I read 'Ella Enchanted' which was made into a movie. The movie was cute, but that was all. The book is 105% better. *nod*

Gah. I can't think of many, but here's what I've got so far (and I haven't read or seen the movies of all of these):

The Bible
Harry Potter series (duh...)
A Series of Unfortunate Events
The Iliad (for the movie Troy)
Dr. Dolittle
Holes
Willy Wonka and the Choclate Factory
The Count of Monte Cristo
Princess Diaries
The Notebook

Picture books:
The Polar Express
Jumanji

And yes, Disney is making the Narnia movie. Here's an article: http://www.moviesonline.ca/movienews_275.html

i am so psyched about the Narnia movie. it's good to see that it will get great treatment on the level of LotR.

i can also add to the list:

The Hound of the Baskervilles
The Picture of Dorian Grey
The Chosen by Chaim Potok

Hmm, I've seen/read:
Troy (movie and book about equal, actually)
The Manchurian Candidate (movie better)
The Lord of the Flies (book waaaaay better)
The Count of Monte Cristo (suprisingly enough, movie was better)
The Three Muskateers (book)
The Princess Bride
Left Behind
The original star wars novels (I think I liked the movies better actually)
Tom and Huck/The adventures of huck finn (neither the book or movie was any good in ANY of its incarnations)

Books I would like to see as movies:
Any of Kate Ross' books--Julian Kestrel was just too cool!
Oxygen by Olson/Ingermanson
The mark of the lion series

Movies I want to read the book incarnations of:
The Time Machine
I, Robot
The Bourne Identity/Supremacy

(I also want to see Bridget Jones' Diary, since it's based off Pride and Prejudice). Whew what a list!

Narnia books,
Island of the Dolphins
Night of the Twisters
Holes
The Phantom Tollbooth--kid's version
Hangman's Curse

To serve your turn long after they are gone
And so hold on when there is nothing left in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!' ...you'll be a Man, my son!

A lot of the book/movie combinations that I've seen have already been mentioned. Hmm, do I have anything to add... *scrolls through thread again*

oldphilosopher, are you referring to a particular Dune movie? (I've seen two different interpretations, so I get to choose between the Lynch version and the Harrison version. The book is still a lot better than either.)

I quite liked "I, Robot" the book, but I still haven't seen the movie. If you liked "Le Comte de Monte Cristo" (The Count of Monte Cristo), you might be interested in the fact that there's an anime version of it under the name Gankutsuou. (Gankutsuou is the title under which the book is sold in Japan)
