GIMP won't do GIF :(

I have been trying to learn to save gif animations with GIMP, but somewhere around the end of the process I realised.... GIMP won't save GIFs!

I am told that it has to do with copyrights, but am also told that they may only apply to some countries. Now, chances seem very unlikely that the US would be one of those countries but I just wanted to check

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there a way to legally make animations with GIMP?

There's a plugin available that will let you save .gifs. You can get it here

And while I'm at it, here's a really good animation tutorial.

Yes, in the U.S., you can legally create, edit, and save files using the GIF format.

Da Rabid Duckie seems to have answered your other questions. I should look into that tutorial also.

Hmmm.... It seems like you got it. Now the question is, "What do you plan to do?"

The lack of GIF saving is to do with a patent ... basically the guys who invented the format (Unisys) decided that any program which used GIF algorithms must pay a royalty. This resulted in a lotta hatin' from the webdesign community.

For more info:

It's important to note that the GIF patent in the US expired last year, but the thing is still in force within other countries (eg. Europe).

I meant 15MB is the maximum amount of data geocities will host... but actually the limit is 5MB since thats the biggest possible upload :P I can be weird sometimes.

Straylight, thanx for clearin that up :thumb:

GIMP 2 has been realised and it can save images in the giff format.

Not to mention the UI looks alot better than it did in previous releases.

Not to mention being a lot more pressing on the comp resources.. which my computer can barely handle as it is. *sigh*
