Finally joined

Hi, everyone--my friends (and my kid) have been bugging me to join this site for years so I finally did it. I might be the oldest person on here...I'm a gramma, so that tells you something. But I've been an anime fan since I can remember (though of course we didn't call it that then). I grew up in LA where there's everything on TV. We even had an anime channel when I was itty bitty (in that double digit UHF space) and I was very attached to Kimba and Astroboy. It always seemed like American cartoons never got to have any real emotions, but those things from Japan....! And I watched a lot of things on low quality VHS with no dubs or subs at all--imagine trying to figure out the plot of Nausicaa that way.

Anyhow, that's why I have Kimba's older sister for my avatar.

I've also been a Christian since I can remember and was fortunately raised in a family that believed in imaginative fiction (my grandfather the pastor had a house full of SF books). But as a mom I of course also worry about whether things are really okay for my kids to watch (well, they make their own decisions now--Midori is my youngest)--there's always that struggle. I'm a Sunday School teacher and also a published fantasy author, and now that my kids are out of the house I'm going to go back to sending things out to magazines, maybe finally really write one of the books I've been mulling over.

I've watched a lot of anime because I've had lots of years to do it, but I'm not as up with the newer things because it's harder to find out about them now. (Oh Animerica, why did you leave me? Oh sample disks, where have you gone?)

Hello and a very warm welcome to you, Riona! I hope you enjoy it here. ^_^

You avatar and mention of the series brings back very happy memories of watching Kimba for me (though, I only watched the videos from my library!).

My standard welcome quip "Welcome to the nuthouse" seems a bit odd to use here, so I'll just say, "we're super excited to have you; see you around!"

You have to imagine me as a princess of one of those teensy little kingdoms in the fairytales that are only as big as the hide of a cow. I published a couple of stories in Marian Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine, which they quit publishing when she died. I get did paid, though, and illustrated (once well and once badly) and one of them won the "favorite story in issue" reward. I also did a bunch of serious reviewing for a couple of magazines and served on the Sturgeon Award jury for years.

I'm the one who introduced Midori to anime, not the other way around.

I meant, he was lucky to get you on this site. I'd love to have my own mother on here, weird as that probably sounds. XD;

Not to derail this thread, but FTR, Ink was a mod here back in the day. She hasn't been around in a long time, though.

As far as I can recall, the only time I have ever had a female symbol was on April 1st. Sorry if that gave you the wrong impression (it was a joke) but I myself am not insulted or bothered at all by being mistaken for female.

In that case my "mother" has some explaining to do to me.
