Ah yes the Spider-Man toku series. This series actually had a very interesting history behind it and is a landmark series for an important reason.
The series was going to start out as a faithful adaptation of the Spider-Man comics. However, Bandai, one of the sponsors of the show, told the producers to add a giant robot into the series. Giant robots at the time were very popular in Japan, and thus, Spidey's origin was completely rewritten for this series.
The reason this series was a landmark is because it started the Super Sentai series.
Before Spider-Man, there were giant robots, but they were piloted by regular people. Likewise, the first two Sentai series, Himtsu Sentai Goranger and J.A.K.Q. Dengeki Tai had costumed heroes, but no giant robot (they instead had vehicles). Spider-Man was the first costumed hero to pilot a giant robot.
This led to Battle Fever J, which was the first Super Sentai series (and also sort of a Japanese version of Captain America). So yeah, Spider-Man led to the birth of Super Sentai. Who'd have guessed, eh?
For the record, Stan Lee loves the show, and was invited by Toei to do the storyline if a future sequel ever happened.
