Superbowl XLII Advertisements

Postby uc pseudonym » Sun Feb 03, 2008 4:36 pm

If precedent holds, there are quite a few of you currently not watching the Superbowl. But some of you, like me, are interested in what kind of commercials corporations are willing to spend millions of dollars to air. Thanks to the internet, it isn't even necessary to watch the game:

The profile is experiencing some instability at the moment, but last year things were fairly consistent by the following day. I have yet to see any of these, but hopefully there will be some honestly humorous ones. We can create a poll if people care enough.

so far, most of the ads have been...not so thrilling. =_= I hope they get better. *sigh*

I watched about half of it to see a sampling of the commercials, and the only one that really made me laugh (or at least, the only one funny enough for me to remember) was the Night at the Roxbury spoof by Pepsi. XD I may browse that later, to see if there are any more that ended up being good.

The other Pepsi one where Justin Timberlake got the crap knocked out of him was kinda funny. (Only because it was Justin Timberlake that got owned tho' )

The only good commercial so far has been the Iron Man movie spot.

If I had to sum up all the superbowl ads this year, I would have to summarize them as:

Meh.

Yeah, I'd have to agree. They weren't all that spectacular, but there were a few that were pretty funny, or at least clever. I liked the talking stain one, and I kinda liked the coke one with the democrat and republican.

I think the 1st quarter had the best ones including:
- Budlight/Firebreathing guy
- Screaming animals/car commercial
- E-Trade/talking baby with stocks
- Fed-Ex/Giant carrier pidgeons

Definetly more memorable then last years.....

OK, the fedex pigeon one was funny. The baby one totally creeped me out, though.

I agree on the FedEx one. I also liked the Coke Macy's Parade one.

I didn't watch the Super Bowl, but I certainly heard it ^ ^; I was on the phone with my niece in the kitchen, but heard,"Baby don't hurt me.. don't hurt me. no more.. ". Then after it,"Wow, that Pepsi commercial.. " Then chuckle from my dad :P

I loved the talking cows...

I don't know why. I think it was because they were talking cows.

The screaming animal one was really funny. And the Will Ferrel beer one got a snicker. Overall though, I agree with the Meh on the commercials overall.

Also agree with the meh except for the Caveman Beer one. Bottle opener sucks!

1> WALL-E
2> Justin Timberlake
3> Flaming-breath Beer
4> 'Cleatus' the Fox NFL Robot battling it out with the Terminator.

Really, Superbowl ads have been mostly meh for a few years now.

The only ones that I like this year were,

Pixar's WALL-E commercial

Truth in Engineering Audi R8 commercial

Coca-Cola It's Mine commercial

Budweiser Clydesdale Team Commercial. I also like the Clydesdale commercials, because they are just fun to watch.

But I want to know, who came up with the CareerBuilder.com "Queen of Hearts" ad? They need a good beating for even coming up with that one.

Like most others here, I felt this was a sorry batch. The ones I'm tempted to mention are really anything that wasn't absolutely uninteresting. Personally the only commercial I found notable was the one with the lightbug and the spider.

Roy Mustang wrote:Really, Superbowl ads have been mostly meh for a few years now.

For several years I thought this was a side effect of the general recession, but it has continued beyond that. Now I must wonder if companies aren't reconsidering whether or not it is worth it to spend that much money on a Superbowl ad.

Oh yeah. I forgot about that one. I was just watching him jump up and down and thinking, "I really hate this stupid..." and then the terminator busts in and takes him down. I busted out laughing at that.

Favorite unmentioned ad: Klondar getting ready to beat up the auto salesman for cars.com.

I really liked the pepsi max commercial and the Budweiser Clydesdale commercial.

And also what about the doritos commercial? Where the guy set a trap for the rat with a corner of a dorito, and then when he sat down to eat a handful of some. But then suddenly a six foot rat(Obviously a guy in a rat costume, but still funny.) comes out of the wall and starts beating him up!

I keep feeling that I seen that ad in the past two super bowls before for some reason.

My favorite ad would have to be the Bridgestone one with a car about to run over Alice Cooper and then Richard Simmons. I also liked the 2 Pepsi ads, the Audi R8 one that referenced The Godfather, and the Bud Light ads that said "Bud Light can make you breathe fire/fly" and the George Lopez one.
