Man, it's too bad not all computer crashes can go like yours did, Volt. I'd say you've been very blessed.

lol...if I had that happen to me, even if i did fix everything again to how it is supposed to be, I'd still want to format and reinstall. It's nice to get a fresh start every once in a while.

I agree with sieg. Some crash-causing trojans/spyware/viruses/worms etc. are too hard to remove manually. If you choose not to reformat, the offending program could remain dormant for a while and reactivate later, either wreaking much more havoc than before, or being very annoying (not to mention potentially opening the door for more malicious things to creep into your system). Don't forget to download the new security updates for windows, and run both updated antivirus software AND antispyware software that could get anything your antivirus might miss.

Good Luck Volt!

P.S. If you need help translating that Spanish on your antivirus software, I'd be able to help you. Just let me know if you need it...

-My anti-virus software is now in Spanish (even though there IS NO language feature)

Sounds to me like there is something 3vil in your box.

Off topic a bit: Listen to this for a cool computer crash.

My Computer Platforms tutor was talking about Overclocking one day, giving a personal experience that he had.
He had a 600Mhz processor. He OCd it to 650Mhz. Turned on the Pc, no problems.
Cranked it up to 700Mhz, turned on and got no problems.
Decided - what the hell. And juiced it up to 900Mhz.

Turns on PC.
9 seconds into loading he smells a strange smell....

Processor burnt its way the whole way through his PC.

That's... unique. I'm happy for you... though the Spanish thing seems somewhat fishy.

Yeah, Saint Kevin is right, I once had a trojan on my computer, i did just about everything to remove it, including getting the removal tool from SARC, and nothing worked. Probably had a few strains of it... I backed up my stuff (very critical to do, trust me i've lost quite a few important things this way...) and formated and it was fine after that.

It's one of the reasons why I'm planning on going Linux for my primary OS (though I've been completely virus free on my Windows setup for it's life).... Linux will wait a bit even though I've got the disk space now.... between the fiasco I created Tuesday night (see my "dumbest thing" thread) and the fact that Theif: Deadly Shadows comes out next Wednesday...... I've no real interest in learning a new OS or tweaking it. ;)

Look for "Hijack This" and the "CWS Shreader" (or something like that, you'll usually find the two hanging around together).... Hijack This is good at letting you spot what's hiding in your system, what's been set to run. It's designed to help track down what's hijacking your system/browser (IE).

The Shreader program is to remove a nasty strain of viruses that are near impossible to remove otherwise... I'd give you the link to them but I seem to have deleted all my stuff Tuesday so I'm a bit short this week on helpful links.

When your ant-virus changes to spanish there must be one major virus or it thinks you need to learn a new language either way I would be very scared 0_o
