Microsoft has put out a free CD (no charge for shipping, even!) with all their security patches for Windows 98 and later, for up to October 2003. This is a must-have for anyone *points at self* who frequently restores one's computer and doesn't have access to Windows Update (or knows which updates are for which OS). I ordered mine today; here's the link to the order form! ^_^

Wow -- I thought I'd never say something nice about Microsoft, but it's a good gesture especially when people are on dialup and can't download the patches. Makes good business sense too.
Supposedly XP Reloaded will be offered on a free CD as well.
In any case, I ordered one for my folks, since their XP box has no Net access at all (standalone video workstation) and *definitely* needs to be patched!

Huh. Whaddaya know... I just ordered one (you can never be too careful).
I wonder WHY they are doing this... Ideas? Sounds like it could be any reason, really. I'm guessing they are trying to reduce load on their servers, but it could just be kindness. Seems a bit out of character, though...

I ordered it from the norwegian web page, so it's global...
Maybe they have a tracking device on the cd so that they can se all you do at your computer...
just kidding..
Good old Bill Gates is getting old... and show of a bit so that all will remember him as a good guy
I have no idea...!!

I'm wondering if I should have made this thread a sticky. I think that this is such good and important news for our many Windows users that it should be on top for all to see, however old the thread gets. (If a mod/admin decides to sticky it, thanks in advance. ^_^ )

It's about time M$ has a little bit of consideration for all their users, now if only they can somehow work on their reliability and security issues than just maybe they won't be AS bad of a monopoly as they are now. Even though Bill is still the devil in disguise. : )

Finally, a free CD that's more useful than 30 days free trial with AOL. Nice move by M$ there.

Looks like they're seriously backordered, of course: I just got a message saying the ship date was pushed back three weeks.

I know; I got one too last night. (That's because everybody in the world wants the CD; maybe I
shouldn't have posted the link.
) To be shipped on June 15, eh? I can wait for it; it's not like I'm in a big hurry for it or anything.

Well well, it looks like they got around to shipping today after all! "Three to eight business days"... that means any time this week or next week. (I guess being patient paid off after all.
)
