a friend of mine is having problems with his monitor. he says it is so dim he can barely see anything (yes he did check the brightness settings
) so i gave him a new monitor that i had laying around and he tried it and it does the same thing. so it's gotta be something with the computer. does anyone have any ideas? he has windows ME.

I'd say that depending on the video card/chip he's got, it might just be that the gamma settings somehow got turned down to "dim." Have him do this, if he can see well enough to do it:
1. Right-click on any empty space on the desktop; choose Properties.
2. Under the Settings tab, click the "Advanced..." button.
3. Somewhere in there, there should be something to do with the gamma settings; try adjusting that to see if it helps.
