DVD screen stretching

Hey I hope this is the right place for this question.
I downloaded a video and burned it to DVD. However it is subtitled and the way that the video is when I watch it on a TV the subtitles are cut off. Is there any way to permanently stretch the video size so I can re-burn it in widescreen format?
Also, I tried it on my friend's Xbox 360 and he was able to use the 360 to stretch it. Can this be done on an original Xbox?
