How to Convert WMV...

Does anyone know how to convert Windows Media (WMV) files without having the lastest Windows Media Player installed or any of the Codecs (which you can't install without the media player).

I've got a Windows 98SE system... but don't want to install the new media player (if I can even install the latestt, doesn't v9 require ME or XP and above?).

All the searches I've done in the past require the Codecs and whatnot.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried doing it through Winamp? I have no idea if it'll help you, but it's all I can think of. (I use it for converting my MIDI files to wave files, so I figure it's worth a shot. ^_^ )

I actually have some plug-ins that will let you play .wmv files in winamp assuming that you do have winamp or are willing to download it.

http://winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=131443 - also plays .mov files

Thanks for the plug-in links, but the 2nd one even states you need Windows Media player installed, and the 1st sounds like it does... and are they WinAmp v3 plugins?

I'll have to look around some more, maybe I can find something.

Sadly Spencer it doesn't.... that program is an Audio converter, I'm looking for video.

I'm downloading Windows Media Player 9, I'm going to see if I can get it to install the codecs, then do a custom uninstall and get rid of everything else.

What really scares me is the DRM junk, but I'm sure I can find a way to get rid of that if I have to.

Hmm. That's a good question. My work is mostly with professional software packages (like cleaner, etc). Let me see if I can find something and get back to you.

What I seriously lacked was the Codecs themselves...

The solution was pretty simple.... MS had the codecs for Media Player 6.4 on their web site (listed as a download for system administrators).

I had to unpack a DLL file to install them though (must have been something that 98Lite removed).

Decodes a little slow though... MPEGs still run better (or DivX).
