Trillian, MSN, and IE

I tried to get my copy of Trillian to connect to MSN yesterday, it used to and stopped working. (I was looking to get ahold of someone from CAA to see if the site was up).

Turns out that the problem of not connecting seems to be related to an update they did to the servers that requires users (and this appears to be true for users of MS's acutal MSN program) to be fully patched to login.

When I searched for the error message number that I was getting I found that they're looking into finding out what it is that is actually causeing the problem, but the fix is to upgrade to IE 6.0 and/or get all the latest security patches for windows.

The problem here for me is that I don't have IE on my system anymore, not the full product anyway. I've kept around a few of the old DLLs for things like the help system, YIM, etc. so they'll continue to work. Frankly I'm not loading that beast on my system.

The problem also seems to come into play with Win95 users (since 95 is now on MS's dead OS list), they can't patch their windows at all.

The reasoning behind this is that it forces people to do the patches and upgrades so that most or all of the hijacking and such can't go on with their system.

It does however kill off my accessing MSN unless they can patch Trillian to work around this problem.

Heads-up to all. ;)

There will be a work around. If not Trillian some other person will do one. AOL tried to do something similar with their IM servers. There was a work around every time.

*edit*Trillian seems to be working for me right now. I'm running Win98 and I have v0.74(w/ patch F) for trillian. My OS has not been patched.

But do you have a running working copy of IE on your system (specifically 5.5 or above?).... that seems to be the link, that and/or a real copy of MSN on the system.

I think Shooby mentioned a text based MSN client, but I think it runs off php or something, I don't know that I could use it.

I still have to look into hiding from someone on AIM before I go back to using Trillian more, and they don't support Yahoo's chat which I use for accessing on of the Yahoo Group chat rooms.

It's in Python, actually. You could make it run under Windows or under MacPython if you like, although I use it under NetBSD.

I have IE 5.0 . It's close, but it's probably the same difference like it is with Python 2.2.0 and Python and 2.2.2 which is a minus for the msnlib. I need to update alot of my software. I will do that this weekend.
