I don't really know what to ask since I've never done this before, but...

What is the step-by-step process of formating a CD and then filing it with content? I have a CD-RW drive and my OS is Windows 98.

Also, is there a way to change all files of a certain type on your computer to files of a different type at once, instead of having to change one file at a time?

And what program do you have for burning CDs? If you use Nero, you just start the program, select data cd, drag the files and directories you want from the "on the computer" pane to the "put on the cd" pane (you'll recognize it because it starts out empty), and click the burn cd icon.

I have no program that I know of that would allow me to simply drag the files from the hardrive to the CD itself. Isn't there a longer, more drawn out way to do it? I got time.

You need software to run your burner. Typically, your CD burner will come with a program to handle this for you. If not, check out the manufacturer's website. They may be able to recommend a program for you and they may even have one you can download.

What about my second question? I had just finished downloading an upgrade for my Quicktime movie player, and suddenly all files on my computer had there extensions changed.

No they didn't. There is no update that changes the extensions of every file on your computer. The extension is the part of a filename after the last period in the name. More likely, it associated them with a new quicktime viewer program, and so they ended up with a different icon. If the extensions were changed for every file, the computer would not be able to boot.

Now CD burners often come with cd authoring software. Check your packaging for a disc with the word "Nero" on it, or for "Easy CD Creator" - two common authoring packages.

I suspect the first time that Quicktime opened, it was told to associate itself with *all* of that kind of file extension. It's a message that you'll see after an installation or update.
