BitTorrent, has grown into a piracy problem the film industry is struggling to handle.
Took 'em long enough to figure it out.

Yeah, bit torrent cant be shut down because it's a lot like kazaa. there's no central host. They can sue people for putting up torrents, but not every torrent is licensed content.
Also I read somewhere that some study showed that bittorrent accounts for up to 30% of all internet traffic. Whoa.

WOW! %30?!
That's crazy.

It's called Copyright laws buddy. Some files on peer-to-peer sharing are "legit," but everyone knows (you included) that 99.9% of the files being shared are illegal. I'm not justifying any sides because I myself have downloaded mp3's and movie files (imports/fansubs). ANd yes, legally if it isn't released in the US it still has a copyright on it. Peer-to-peer has it good and bads. For example:
I downloaded the first 3 episodes of Vandread. I liked it so much I went out and bought the whole series. So releaser profited from Peer-to-peer.
Counter:
I downloaded a whole cd. Didn't like it. So i decided not to buy the music cd. So in fact, I heard the whole cd w/o paying. The company doesn't benefit.
All I'm saying is that if you enjoy something enough, go out a buy it if at all possible. Given somethings aren't released in the US.
So I can kind of see how Bandai is cracking down on illegal anime disruption, it can hurt them in the long run. Most people download them, then never go out and buy the series. Personally, I believe in peer-to-peer to a degree. Download the first couple episodes, if you like it, buy it.

Hmm.. does that mean that 3 in 10 people connected to the internet are using BitTorrent?

probably

I believe the 30% means, perhaps 3/10 people or make up about 30% of all internet activity/downloads off the net. I believe the whole point was to say that Bittorrent is quite popular. But serious, this thread doesn't seem to be going anywherere (with a lot of Spam) or serving much purpose.. Personal opinion. *shrugs*

I have moved this thread to Computing.
Meanwhile, however, I would hope that no one truly sees the need to post here. I believe the thread has more than served whatever purpose it had, and has a high probability of being an argument. My personal opinion is near agasfas': this thread is serving fairly little purpose and has a fair amount of spam.
Yes, it was interesting to hear the 30% statistic. But would it have been worth a post if that was all I had to say? Not in my opinion, no.

I don't think they meant it like that. More like 30% of the internet's total bandwidth is being consumed by bittorrent.

That statistic doesn't neccessarily maybe mean, 3 in every 10 use Bit Torrent (Though to you the truth, it wouldn't come as a suprise). But since the client utlilizes a lot bits being exchanged, as the parameters are set for the download and upload rate,.
This accounts for a huge number of data soaking up loads of bandwidth. Get a few downloads or uploads from a few hundreds users, and the amount of bits being traded seems like a few hundred thousand users.
I guess that's why it wasn't very hard for the MPAA to track down these Bit Torrent mirrors and shut them down.

I don't download music, because I could get jail time if caught and that's not a risk I want to take. But, is it alright to download things such as pictures from file sharing networks such as Kazaa and BitTorrent? Also I heard that it was ok to download network TV shows (not cable) as long as it is the episode as aired on TV and not copied from a DVD or something. Is this true?
