Webhosting

Okay, I wanted to start building an online portfolio for myself, e.g. what I write, a little about me, et cetera. However, that's what I am - a writer, not some techno-savvy person.

Can anyone make good recommendations as to what sites are good to host from? I would prefer something free (wouldn't we all) but if it's cheap I might be interested in it. I would like something with either a domain name that I could register/have registered or have a subdomain (pref. the reg. domain, though).

Thanks in advance!

(I'm sorry if this question has been asked before or that this is possibly the wrong forum!)

Are you considering hosting it yourself on your own computers, or would you prefer to pay someone to host it somewhere else? The first is "free" but you'd need some experience.

is it like in a directory-sort of fashion? just to uupload files, or make an actual webpage that looks nice and stuff?

Nah, my computer is pretty crummy to do that. I would rather have someone host it elsewhere.

I wanted it to look somewhat nice -- nothing flashy, mind you -- but it would seriously be a bare-bones site. Yes, it's in a directory-sort of fashion, too, just with a smidge of Staci-esque flair. ^_^

Edit:

What does everyone thing of this place? Phoenix Rising

Or would it be better to go with the place that glitch posted? e.g. Which is the better deal? ^^

how much actual web space are you going to need?

Well, I'm building an online portfolio of what I write/edit/blah blah blah. So the size will be constantly changing for the larger. It's just a bunch of text files, though, with a few JPEG images here and there.

That's why I'm asking the techi-type people because I really don't know WHAT I need.

How many hits are you anticipating getting? If it's relatively low, you could probably find a nice person here on CAA who would give you a bit of space on one of their servers. Updating the site might be a challange, though, unless you know how to do sftp.

As for hits, I don't know... Guess that depends on how many times I send the link out to be perfectly honest.

I actually found out who hosts Animefringe (site I write for) and it's relatively affordable... Free domain name and the works for $7.95/month. I've decided to go with them because I know they're reliable, cheap, offer loads of space and bandwidth, and (hopefully) won't be going anywhere any time soon!

Thanks everyone for your input! :thumb:

Tell us what the site will be when you get it going. :)

Of course! It's going in my SIGNATURE, man! Like... like it's a far-out concept, y'know?

(Okay... I've had one too many candies today.)

But yes, I will let everyone know when it's functioning. ^_^

if it is just a profile of some sort and just uploading pictures, no media files, geocities would be jsut fine. I had an old geocites site for a while and its's still up and running
