Networking + Microsoft x Me / Bad luck = Call for Help!!!

Alright, I need help and ASAP!

College starts tomorrow and I wanted a clean smooth running computer. You know, fresh start.... so, I reformatted the 'ol hard drive last night.

Ok, blah, blah... that all went fine (minus finding the files I needed to transfer over the network), then I installed XP Home (boring).

Ok here's where the real problem start....

When I tried to install the network and connect the computer to the network, I'm just at a loss. I've tried the simple things I know to (installing network card driver, and all…maybe there’s something I missed) and several other things. Sorry, I can't even remember what else I've tried right now... my brain is fried... I've been working at this for seven hours. Anyways, I can't get the computer to recognize the network or Internet it's physically connected to. It was working fine yesterday before I reformatted.

My Computer's Specs (the one with the problem:

XP Home

Dell XPS (2003)
2.8 ghz P4 (HT 800mhz bus speed)
1 gig of DDR ram

Intel PRO 10/100 (networking card, I'll have to double check on the name)

Router:

Netgear Gearbox

Cable Service:

Charter

Folk's Computer (network's online and internet's reading fine):

XP Home

AMD Atholon (1.8 Ghz equal)
256 SD Ram

$15 Microsoft Networking card

Sorry, I can't be more specific and name all the things I tried.... my brain is dead...
