It's only a mockup, actually. I'm not terribly surprised since there were a lot of iMac ripoffs after the original Bondi Blue iMac emerged as well.

What I've come to realize is that all Apple imitations are uglier than if they hadn't tried.

But it's not even real. It's a mockup, it doesn't even work, and Intel isn't going to manufacture them.

Oh come on! Be nice everyone, afterall "Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery" right?

I'd like to see these, actually. I don't think they would compete directly with the Mac Mini, and I'd LOVE to reclaim some of my lost server space with a few bucks worth of small cheap hardware! The real questions are:
1. Can I mount it to the bottom of a shelf?
2. Can I put linux on it.

I'd like to mount one to the bottom of a land mine.

Let me put that @#$% iPod mini there next to it.
(Finally got a RocBox: that worked without a glitch-- kinda the way I expected an Apple product to work :P )

ROFL ROFL ROFL! That seriously made my day

a-hem

would it even be worthy enough for linux? I'd buy one for the sole purpose of like.... using them for stands for gundam models or something... maybe... a door stopper... or a paper weight.... or for coasters! yeah! coasters! microsoft coasters! of course salvage parts like the ram cards, and harddrives, processors, drivers, put them in little protective cases, and sell em on ebay

They put linux on an iPod. What makes you think they can't put it on this? :)

http://ipodlinuxinstl.sourceforge.net/
Here's an installer for installing Linux to an iPod from a Mac. I think there's also a Windows version.

And here's a review.

wow, I'd hit that, but does it work with iPod mini on a PC?

on topic: What about shuttle pcs? theve been around for years. also Fraboxes have given PC users a small case with huge capabalitys.

I still dont understand why if they make a copy, thats how the industry works! ( for M$ anyways...)

It will fail horribly. =)

 I'm actually sitting next to my brother's ShuttleX PC as I type this. I'm not the biggest PC buff out there, and I know next to nothing about the specifics of my brother's computer, BUT:

1. It runs Ragnarok Online very nicely (in fact, I think the graphics card in his Shuttle is better than the one in my tower) +
2. I've abused the hard drive space and it's still going strong. +
3. It takes up less space on the desk than my monitor does +
4. If my parents actually gave it to him for Christmas, it had to be pretty cheap ( my parents NEVER buy anything expensive) +
5. It has to sit on the desk with the cover off half the time, or it'll overheat and crash -
6. No room for speakers, only headphones. +/-

I'm not sure what you're saying. After you get through asserting the mini is an inefficient design, why are you recommending similarly small PCs? Either the design works, or it doesn't.

the mac mini doesn't use laptop ram... it uses a standard full size PC2700 DDR RAM card... the same as any desktop

People don't see that, though. People just see the $499.

I'm sure Apple would love to sell those people an eMac anyway if they *did* figure it out. (By the way, it's $799 for the base model.)

for a mac mini with a 1.42 ghz processor, a gig of ram, 80 gig harddrive, bluetooth + airport extreme card, and keyboard and mouse.

$1,181.00

for an emac with a a 160 gig harddrive, 1.25ghz processor, 1 gig of ram airport card and bluetooth module, keyboard and mouse

$1,453.00

the thing is... the mac mini doesn't come with a monitor...

id still get it though... im sure i can find some monitor around or buy one for cheap. Even if its a CRT monitor

Well, the Mac Mini looks simple, kind of like an iPod type thing.
On the other hand, the eMac was just an ugly iMac.

i got my issue of macworld today, it was comparing the mini mac (499 dollar one) to the dell dimension 2400 (399 dollar one)

basically, the cons of the mini mac were:
no display
no keyboard + mouse
harddrive runs at 4,200 RPM (dell is 7,200 RPM)
2 usb ports (dell dimension has 6)
processor is slower than dells (but i'd say that doesnt matter much, OS X tends to be faster than XP)

the cons of the dell were:
video card is not dedicated, as it uses the system's ram as well. Plus the card sucks. integrated extreme graphics thing.
a CELERON processor (ewwies)
no firewire port
dvd-rom is read only, not writable. (the mini mac has a combo drive (dvd-rom and cd-rw drive)
more crappirific software (internet explorer, wordperfect, paint shop pro trial, etc)
xp home, not pro (which you can change but the default is home)
no bluetooth and wireless adapter/card to start with.
warranty is 90 days, the mini mac's is 1 full year.
