Free Servers

Postby Doubleshadow » Mon May 22, 2006 3:58 pm

I apologize if this is a duplicate, but I used the search engine and didn't come up with anything.

I found out TODAY that in addition to the oral presentation Wed. and 2-4 page proposal due Friday, I have to make a webpage for all my research and update regulary as part of the deal for the research program I'm working in, in addition to actually doing the research. This would be no big deal (my boss said she'd help me with the actual page) except I have to scare up a server. The real clincher of the situation is I leave the country next week and I'll be gone for a month, so I need to get this taken care of ASAP. If anyone knows where I can find a reliable free server that won't get hacked or crash or embaress the faculty, I would much appreciate it if you would tell me about it. :?:

hmm... if you just need to record your research data and log it, I guess livejournal might work. Or you could try http://www.geocities.com, http://www.angelfire.com, or http://www.tripod.com.

Slater asks a valuable question. Do you need an entire SITE, or just a place to put data? If the later, how much "advertising" is OK? You can get free webhosting at places like he mentions, but it's usually a shared site. Do you need to password protect any of your data or anything? That would make it more difficult, but I could probably hook you up with a working site. Can you let us know a bit more about what you'll need? Do you have a project spec you can post?

If you want some free web space, PM me, I can lend you some, no advertising :)
*edit* If you're wondering, I have a chunk of reseller space I bought because it was such a good deal. I host some friends' sites, one or 2 of my own, and my church's site on it. No host can guarantee you 100% uptime, but this one is pretty good :)

After asking some questions, I just need something that other people in the program can look at. The simplest thing they'll except is something on the V drive. As far as an actual web page goes, I got the impression it could be as simple or as complicated as I want as long as I can update it. He made no mention of advertsing regulations. I think they want something that will be good advertsing for the research and the university. I asked about the school giving us space on the server for websites since they are required, and by the end he was suggesting I translate my site into Spanish as well to reach a greater audience and make a better impression. I'll probably end up on the V drive at this point; I won't be able to get anything more together in time. Thank you for your help.

Your school dosn't provide you with server space? Every student at our school has a chunk of server space for stuff like this...

You could always get Webserver on a stick: http://www.chsoftware.net/en/useware/wos/wos.htm I have a usb drive with this on it, it can even host PHP/MySQL applications.
