I am not the most qualified person to speak to you about this. However, I will do my best.
From what I've read, Chobits doesn't appear to be all that bad. The question is whether you find it offensive.
There's some objectionable sexual content, and our main character is in a frequent state of undress. The key issue is if these are problems for you, or if you have felt led by the Spirit to stay away. It's one of those issues where discernment is required.

I've got the first two volumes. Be careful. It's definately not for kids anyway, although I'd say the anime is okay.

Chobits huh? Well I'm a big CLAMP fan so I thought I'd checkit out and boy was I shocked! It is definitely not for kids! There is frequent sexual references and scenes with Chii with little or nothing on. Still love the artwork, just they could have left some objectionable stuff out of the story line . . .

That sounds like me and X. -_- Still love the art, but I don't read it anymore.

Yeah, CLAMPs artwork is great, but not all their stories are . . . I like Magic Knights Rayearth, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Angelic Layer. These are all good if you like CLAMP but not Chobits. . . I wouldn't reccomend Chobits unless you can tolerate and have no guilt about reading some of the stuff in it.

Frontal nudity??? Not in the first vol at least. From that vol and the anime, the nudity isn't very detailed. Your typical "barbie-doll" style.

It's not barbie doll in the manga even though it is in the anime... In the anime, there are no details... In the manga, it's like the ranma manga... It's not COMPLETELY anatomically correct, it's Animetomically correct! Anything completely correct is labeled a hentai, so they stop short of the full monty.
In the anime, there's not even very much barbiedollism... It's very brief, but I think in the manga (I think it was the first issue, when he pulls her out of the trash) it's a full page picture... Equivalent to about a full minute's worth in an anime, I guess... (my own measurements, of course)
Besides the change from "Sumomo" to "Plum" (grr!) there is also the "spicing up" of the dialogue. There is frequent use of the "f" word...

Ja, ja, I agree with most people here about all the negative stuff. And I agree that it makes it an anime/manga to avoid. But it isn't completely horrible, and does deal with some interesting issues. Just to keep this thread somewhat balanced.

BTW what is a chobit? And what's up with those ears?
<Tieed: Hiya i'm replying to the Chobits stuff...I've read the manga and have seen the anime, there is little difference in it's content, except for the swearing...however all in all Cohbits can teach a couple lessons, one is that we should not be obbsessed with our computers and others things like that and forget about our friends & family, and it's second lesson is to well...save your self until your married..although in the manga it says until you find the one who loves you very much...any how there are many sexual jokes and Chii the main character could use some clothes, all in all however i like this manga just not enough to go out and by every new volume.>
Personally i think the bad outwieghs the good. There are other places to get the same messages. i dont think i would want to be caught dead with the manga in ma house. klinda stinks that such beatuful artwork like that is wasted. (Kinda like san francisco)

Is it me or did that sound kind of mean?

A chobit is an experimental personcon with free will. All other personcons react according to their programming. The ears are where the cables are stored.

Personcon... That word is a product of ignorant fans who mistranslated "Pasokon"
"Pasokon" is just Japanese for "Personal Computer" and had nothing to do with their shape or the fact they were androids... And the Tokyopop version of the manga really made me mad... Changing names is an unforgivable offense (for a company), in my opinion... It doesn't shock me now that I know Tokyopop is just the new name for Mixx... Mixx did that quite often... It really depends on who they get to translate though, because Kodocha wad done really well... Anytime, however, that an "f" word is in a manga, it's just the translator putting his/her own "flair" on the dialogue...
Oh, and the
The manga = more nudity, plus "animetomically correct"
The anime .= less nudity, Barbiedoll when it does happen.
They both probably have about equal on jokes and sexual comments... I haven't seen the Dub for it, so I don't know how the translation is handled...
There are much better anime and manga out there, though... Not only that, but the conclusion to the story (well, at least the anime... Haven't read the manga all the way) introduces serious thought to a philosophy I find dangerous, but that didn't stop me from watching Jurassic Park

I hope not. Cephas isn't exactly thin skinned, though, I didn't think he'd take offense. It certainly wasn't intended that way. Besides, if you want to interprete it as a mean statement, what is it supposed to mean? I have no idea.

I wouldn't go as far as saying ignorant. After all, anime fans don't go asking for aisu kurimu on a hot summer day. And I mis-spelled it. I should have typed "persocom". Either one makes perfect sense to me: a personal computer or a person computer. Translating is more than being exact about the word.

I think that it was meant to be "Personal Computer" which would fit with calling Sumomo a "laptop" and that weird one a PDA. You are correct in what you said about translation... It should be done based on context, and the context for chobits was for it to be Personal Computer, going by those other two examples and also just the use of analogy in the story.

That makes sense. Plus, I do agree with the name change. Its down right heresy. Sure Susumu means plum, but we don't go calling people by what their name means. That would be stupid.
Do they only do that to Susumu or do other Chobits characters fall prey?

They probably changed her name to Plum to "Americanize" it...
Either that or they didn't know what they doing...
You know, I'm not really a Chobits fan but name-changes don't usually bother me as much as other changes (unless the two names are so different you wonder how on earth they came up with it.)

I'm with MasterDias, in that I'm generally not too offended by random name changes. It is translation, after all, and some things will be lost in the process. I'd rather they do something new than something like "Magic Ice Crystal Mirror Attack" in Naruto.
But occasionally, as in this case, it does change meanings, and that isn't good.

My problem lies with name changes. Attacks are one thing. Who knows what "kaze no kizu" means. So you have to change it. But people's names, its almost like saying that the name wasn't good enough.

Though there are times when the names aren't good enough. I understand what you're saying, though.
Let me clarify my point, though. Sometimes when you translate something directly, it's stupid. While it might sound cool in another language, sometimes in English you end up with something pretty dumb ("Magic Ice Crystal Mirror Attack").
PostPosted: Fri Dec 12, 2003 6:00 pm

Exactly.
So the American translators will change the attack name to something that sounds a lot better.
UC's example, above, would probably be changed to something like, oh say, "Crystal Reflection".
Of course, sometimes the translators and scriptwriters are just lazy and one attack ends up with half-a-dozen different names in the English version. Things like that make me annoyed.

Okay then, I guess out of all the people who have posted in this thread so far, I would be pretty qualified.
Let's see...I've read about the entire series (yes, I have read the last volume) though I may have missed the second to last tankubon.
Just to let everyone know, this post gets really spoiler-ish.
Well, there is the whole event that occurs when Chii tries to get a job for the first time...she inadvertently ends up working in a peep show for her first job- and weird stuff happens. Of course, this being a series directed towards older males in Japan, there are tons of sexual references: overt, and implied.

At the end of the series, Hideki becomes Chii's "platonic" male friend/father figure/teacher -he does love her, but he cannot
unite with her as he could with another human being (if he was married). Chii is truly a Chobit, but the legend about the Chobits proves to be false: they cannot act outside of their programing.
That disappointed me to no end. Chii is still just a machine after all.
Still, things get...um..."pseudo-Biblical" since some of the characters start saying things about the persocoms "being made in man's image" and "it's a sin to love something that only
appears human" -even though that is what this series seems to be promoting!
and about being human [in other ways] when they technically aren't. It's disconcerting to say the least.
Also, another odd thing in this series is:
Chii needed to find love lest she wreak havoc on the entire world by disabling all other persocoms o.0]
and s'about it for now.
