"Gangnam Style" is a Korean neologism that refers to a lifestyle associated with the Gangnam district of Seoul, where people are trendy, hip and exude a certain supposed "class".

Oppa is a korean expression used by females to refer to an older male friend or an older brother.

English lyrics to Gangam style:
Oppa is Gangnam style
Gangnam style

A girl who is warm and humanle during the day
A classy girl who know how to enjoy the freedom of a cup of coffee
A girl whose heart gets hotter when night comes
A girl with that kind of twist

I’m a guy
A guy who is as warm as you during the day
A guy who one-shots his coffee before it even cools down
A guy whose heart bursts when night comes
That kind of guy

Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Now let’s go until the end

Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh

A girl who looks quiet but plays when she plays
A girl who puts her hair down when the right time comes
A girl who covers herself but is more sexy than a girl who bares it all
A sensable girl like that

I’m a guy
A guy who seems calm but plays when he plays
A guy who goes completely crazy when the right time comes
A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles
That kind of guy

Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Now let’s go until the end

Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh

On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby
I’m a man who knows a thing or two
On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby
I’m a man who knows a thing or two

You know what I’m saying
Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh

... I think I prefer not knowing, so I don't have to care about what it says and can still enjoy the song. I'm gonna go forget this ever happened now.

I'm proud to say this is the first time hearing (about this) song for me. Not that it's not kinda fun to learn about, but I'm very glad for every irrelevant to life internet hype that passes me without me noticing (although I did just now notice it because you created a thread about it in the general section of the site instead of the correct "Jam Session" sub-forum that is located in the Anime & Entertainment part of the forum or maybe the Goof-off sub-forum that is located right below the General sub-forum and because of this placement in the General section, I thought that this was something that was important).

Didn't much care for this song before, now I know just how vapid it really is.

To Neane's point though, this Internet hype has entered the real world as the song is being played in pub quizzes and night clubs.

What does it mean when they say Oppa Gangnam style? I know you explained what they both mean separately, but is it saying that older gentlemen live classy? Or that being old for males is classy?

Well it was never meant to be taken serious. PSY just wanted to make a dumb and catchy song. He succeeded.

Or you know, it could be viewed as satire.

Honestly, I don't care for the song or the lyrics.

The big draw for me was how insane and stupid the music video is. I laughed my butt off at it.

Well, I think that it means he himself is living classy.

Oppa is form of address which is used by a younger sister to call her elder brother in Korean families.

It is also used by Korean women to address their senior male friends, their
boyfriend and even their husband as a sign of respect in a friendly manner.

Gangnam is a district(Gangnam-Gu), one of the richest in Seoul, the capital of South Korea.

This district is famous for wealth, high standard of education, modernity, and the presence of institutions, restaurants and fun places for young people to hang out.

It is said that most hot trends and crazes start from Gangnam spreading throughout the nation.

About the song : The song begins with a guy describing the ideal girl for himself,
and then he boasts about himself as a bigguy describing how tough, passionate and warmhearted he is.

He is intending to attract girls by saying he is 'Gangnam style' which means he is a trendy, cool, rich and tough guy.

Probably all of the above.

I really want this song to go to #1 in the country but it's been stuck at #2 for like 4 weeks now.

Some songs should never see the light of day.

This includes every song LMFAO has put out as well as this.
Not to mention this is a rip off of "Sexy and I Know it" which is terrible enough.

I have a love-hate relationship with the internet.

I dunno, this is fun and it has a great hook.

Like, the Macarena is ridiculously stupid but I don't think it should be smited from the earth or anything.

But I love LMFAO and Party Rockin - I think they're among the greatest songs my generation has on regular radio.

Personally though, I much prefer Gandalf Style instead of Gangum Style:

I like the song. I even like the lyrics because of the nonsense and other reasons. Thanks for posting! :n_n:

The first time I heard this song I thought they were saying Open Catnip Style. I didn't know it was in a foreign language, so that's really what I thought it was saying!

I enjoy listening to songs of foreign languages without knowing the lyrics, too. It sounds random. But the time can come to know the lyrics.

*Personal note, I'm finally calling them "foreign languages" instead of "other languages. For a traveler it's a big deal. Or for me, at least, it is.

Also, I like the part where he says a conservative girl is more sexy than one who bares it all. Very few popular songs say that. 'Course he usually says it in Korean, but what can you do?

Then you may find this funny. He does a collaboration with Korean girl Yuna and acts even more wacky.

I'll have to do the hider for this just in case: My coworker had a similar thought; she thought he said, SPOILER: Highlight text to read: "Open Condom Store" or "Welcome To The Condom Store"
