i don't have a favorite j-band...i'm freestyling with my options since fads change so easily. XD but still, Masami Okui still has the best jpop/rock voice i've ever heard. strong backbone and a brilliant voice with an extraordinary ring to it...not something you hear very often. ^^

Hey DrNic, if you like the harder stuff, you might like Miyavi. He's a little on the weird side though, and I can't vouch for most of his lyrics ^_^; It also doesn't help that he has a thick kansai accent o.o Hmm...try Pop is Dead. That song is good and weird XD

I've started downloading Pop is Dead and another track called Girls be Ambitious.
I'll add my opinion after I've listened to them... (This is a good way to check lyrics before buying an album.)

I'm not familiar with J-rock/pop. Where do you find this stuff? What kinds are there? Could you run a few by me in a Japanese/American "sounds-like" comparison sort of way so I know what I might want to look for?

Hmmm...I'm not very good at comparing Japanese <-> American bands -_-; But I can tell you that the music there is just as diverse as it is here.

I got into j-rock thanks to a Japanese exchange student at my school. She let me borrow her L'arc-en-ciel CD and I got hooked. ^_^;

Anyway, X Japan was one of the first j-rock/visual kei bands. They're pretty uh...well, my brother-in-law compared them to an 80s band called Queensryche, if that helps any. o.o (no idea...)

I've heard people compare Miyavi to the likes of Static X and Powerman 5000, but I have no clue who they are, sooo...o_O

Erm...I'm no good at this -_-; One of the other j-rockers around here might be able to offer more insight than I can.

The Mad Capsule Markets. Their ninth album, Osc-Dis (Oscillator in Distortion) was marketed over here in England (so I also assume over in america). They are like The Chemical Brothers mixed with Slipknot (they are not mainstream like the Chemical Brothers though, they are very heavy, its just that they use lots of techno effects). And their album is clean! No swearing at all. I have it and love it! You can also get a couple of their previous albums on Amazon and such on import. You just have to look around.

Spoonybard, you have both the coolest name and coolest sig ever in life.

As for J music, I can't give a "sounds like" list, but I can suggest a few cool groups.

Do As Infinity - This group is appreciated by nearly everyone who hears them. They're primarily rock, though the lead singer has apparently done some techno. They're not too pop-ish, but they have some catchy music and lyrics.

B'z - if you like music from the late eighties/early nineties, you'll like these guys. They have a sort of caribbean feel to them sometimes.

I'm actually more of a J Hip-Hop/R&B guy myself, so here's what I like:

M-flo - VERY cool sound, kind of pop/hip-hop, always nice to listen to. The rapper of the group is a Christian and apparently went for his Master's in Boston.

Rip Slyme - These guys are so cool. Most of their songs have a Hispanic-influenced feel, and they're all about having fun.

Kick the Can Crew - Same purpose as Rip Slyme, but totally different music. They get serious more often.

Flick - I've only heard two songs from them, but one of them is considered one of the best J hip-hop songs ever, and I agree. They make music that you wake up to.

Ketsumeishi - nice sound, nice beats. Don't know much about them, though.

Soul'd Out - These dudes are pretty tight. Their music always sounds poppy to me, but it's a good kind of poppy.

Go to songjapan.com to listen to any of those bands, plus like a hundred more. The sound quality is kind of bad, but the file sizes are small. You can download a song and listen to it in two minutes on a dial-up connection.

If you want music videos, go to nanokiero.com. They also have DAI's Gates of Heaven album.

The Mad Capsule Markets are the only J-Rock band I've heard. Where would I hear more?

Markets rule. Their lyrics make no sense whatsoever an example

Explode the nerves
Wake possibility
Restart everyone
Restart everyone

That's the WHOLE lyrics for the song Restart from Osc-Dis

My fave songs are Tribe, Pulse, Restart and Midi-Surf.

I also like the Black Mages, they play ALL Final Fantasy songs in Metal format!

Kool! Tribe and Pulse are awsome songs!

My favourites also include 'Good Girl', 'Island' and 'All the Time in Sunny Beach'.

I quite like j-pop too, especially Megumi Hayashibara, Ayumi Hamasaki, and Two-Mix.

I'd have to go with the Seatbelts, The Pillows, and the ALI PROJECT. They did the theme songs for Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, and Noir, respectively.
