Expand Your Musical Horizons...

Postby The Liar XIII » Mon Jan 26, 2009 1:26 pm

Has this been done here yet?
I got it off another forum, and it's great for music lovers to discuss music and discover new kinds.

The whole idea for the thread is to give people suggestions for music, ask if this band/artist is any good, if this song is good, does this member like this band?

For example:
By the way, if anybody's looking for some good grunge, check out Nirvana.

Is AC/DC a good band?

Anybody ever hear "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath? If so, is it good?

Hey, Tsukuyomi, do you like R.E.M.?

Straight forward enough, my friends?

So maybe I'll start.
Here's a little recommendation for you.

If anybody is into classic rock (around the 1960's or 1970's), I highly recommend the band The Doors.
With the "Lizard King" Jim Morrison on mic, Ray Manzarek on piano, John Densmore on drums, and Robbie Krieger rocking out on Guitar, they were one of the biggest bands in their era.
On July 3rd, 1971, Jim Morrison died of Heart Failure, but still, after his tragic passing, The Doors are still a great band. With big hits like "L.A. Woman", "The End", "20th Century Fox", "Light My Fire", and the unforgettable "Break on Through", they are truly a great band.
Go check them out sometime! ;)

EDIT: Don'tcha just love the way I talked up The Doors? lol. Robbie Krieger rocking out on Guitar.. I'm so cool.

The only song I heard from his latest stuff was his cover of "Morning Dew". But then again, he did that way back when.

Is it any good?

Everyone should own Frank Zappa's "Hot Rats" album. Out of the 37 gigs of music I own, that's my favorite 50 or so megs.

A duck hears also." - Igor Stravinsky

Sometimes he is, but this album is pretty much just music....music with no lyrics (except for about 2 minutes worth on one track)

I've only heard his CD "Mighty Rearranger" but I liked it. I thought it was pretty good.

Hey has anyone heard of the band Deathstars? I stumbled on a song of theirs and I actually liked them well enough. Not generally what I listen to but anyway, I was wondering if they're satanic or whatever (ok I know hardly any bands are actually satanic but you know what I mean). I don't wanna buy an album and get a bunch of garbage "evil" type songs.

I never heard of 'em, but I did look them up.
And honestly, they reminded of the band Lordi.
Lordi - "Blood Red Sandman"

I did like Lordi at one point, but after realizing the size of their MASSIVE ego, I got out of them.
Seriously, who in their right mind says their better than Alice Cooper and KISS? Lordi, that's who!

But, Alice Cooper responded :)
Alice Cooper responds to Lordi

But, as I see Scarecrow, you are into Power Metal, so, I shall ask the question:
Did you ever hear of the band Angra?

No I have not :D But I checked em out and they seem pretty good. I'll have to look into them some I'm really not THAT familiar with a lot of artists just cause I've only really gotten into listening to any kind of music in the last two years so my knowledge of bands are really quite limited aside from the ones I do know (which I tend to have all or most of their albums).

I tend to find new bands when they're recommended to me when I buy stuff on Amazon :D So if its never been recommended, I probably haven't heard of them :P

Oh.. about Lordi... lol... I never heard of them before either but they're funny :P I actually really liked that video. Actually though, there was this other I clicked on, Hard Rock Hallelujah... omg awesome! It's a bit cheesy/campy (really the band seems cheesy themselves always dressed up in those costumes) but it was very catchy, I had to get the album. And then "The Devil is a Loser"? Omg lol... The chorus is awesome. These guys are so catchy. It's like... great party music. I can't stand egos though but... meh... how can anyone take these guys seriously?

You should check out Five Finger Death Punch. They're pretty vulgar, but they are definitely one of the best newer bands I've heard. Two or three of their members are from that old band W.A.S.P., which I also recommend.
Here's one of their cleaner songs: "The Bleeding" - Five Finger Death Punch
And here's a WASP song: "Inside the Electric Circus" - W.A.S.P.

Some other good Lordi songs are:
Wake the Snake, Would You Love a Monster Man?, Who's Your Daddy?, and Shotgun Divorce.
