Most underrated bands

One thing I hate about rock is that so many bands don't get the fame they deserve. So, in this thread, let's name some bands worth checking out, even if they aren't as well-known as Metallica or AC/DC.
Here's some I thought of:
Faith No More
B-52s
Extreme
Tears For Fears

I totally agree with Faith No More. They deserve way more respect than they get.

I'll come up with a list later when I have more time but I just wanted to say that.

OK Go. Most people just know "Here it Goes Again" because of the treadmill video that swept YouTube, but it's actually one of their weaker songs, IMO. Look up "A Million Ways" and you'll see what they're capable of musically.

Oh my.

The Dear Hunter.
The Decemberists (among the people I know, at least XD)
Edison Glass
Future of Forestry
House of Heroes (actually, they might belong more to the "unknown" category; most people I know offline haven't even heard of them)
Lydia
The Manchester Orchestra
Mates of State
The Reign of Kindo
Sherwood (unless I just hear nothing about them from other people, which is very possible. XD)
Sufjan Stevens
Watashi Wa

That's all that comes to mind for now. XD

Yeah...I made a quick scan through these bands and I don't think there are any I recognise. Fail. XD

At least the thread is appropriate then.

Let's see. I've recently discovered that some of the bands I thought were unknown (Breaking Benjamin, Within Temptation, etc.) are actually a bit more popular than I'd thought.

Trading Yesterday (their songs are so beautiful, but you can't find a CD of theirs anywhere!)
Tribal Ink
Lecrae (Christian rapper who can actually rap)
SR-71
Luca Turilli (symphonic metal ftw!)
MaNga (of course, since they're a Turkish band, that's understandable)
Niyaz (Persian - also understandable)

This thread is making me wonder how big the difference is between west coast radio and east coast radio. Some of these groups are incredibly popular over here.

Anyways, here's a short list:

Band of Horses

Fleet Foxes

Abney Park

The entire genre of Jazz.

YESSSS. They're from my state. They're awesome. I love them. But I agree, they're underrated. XD

Adding to this list, Dear and the Headlights. I dunno why I didn't mention them my first time around in this thread.

Dear Forest. Dear Jerky. Dear Rub. Santa's Reindear. Honda Tadakatsu Wore Dear Antlers On His Helmet.

Powerman 5000 is an excellent metal band that I never hear anyone talk about.

Quite odd, since the frontman is the younger brother of Rob Zombie.

Nazareth is BY FAR the most underrated band I know of. Seriously, they're a 70's Mega Group, hands down one of the best if not THE best bands from the 70's. And you HARDLY hear any of their stuff in movies nor on the radio. It's sad, since they're my favourite band.

Screaming Trees/Mark Lanegan is also pretty underrated in my books.

And you can't forget The Stampeders. Even though they're a pretty big band in Canada, they should be more world renown.

Secret and Whisper
One Minute Halo (technically they disbanded a few weeks ago.....how could they....but still)
Hymns of Eden (technically, these guys don't have an album out yet, so they probably won't even qualify as underrated....yet....awesome sound)

Poe.
She's only had 2 albums so far (1995's Hello and 2000's Haunted) but they're both awesome. And I think she's working on a new project. If you've never heard any other Poe songs before, you may remember her old single, "Angry Johnny".

Mike Doughty.
The guy from Soul Coughing. He does a solo thing now, and he's one of my favorites.

rocklobster wrote:B-52s

So tell me again how a group with a 4xPlatinum album, a second Platinum album, AND a gold album "doesn't get the fame they deserve?" Last I checked, people who don't get the fame they deserve don't have even a gold album, much less a MULTI-PLATINUM one.
Tears For Fears

Ha ha, these guys are even LESS underrated than the B-52s! Let's see...a 5xPlatinum? Two Platinums and two Golds? Oh wait, and that's just in AMERICA! In BRITAIN they have a 3xPlatinum, a 2xPlatinum, two additional Platinums, and a Silver.

So with this in mind, I will give my list of underrated bands according to rocklobster's definition which seems to be "every band that exists."

Guns N' Roses
Rolling Stones
The Beatles
Queen
Journey
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd

The Sundance Kids (becoming more recognised recently though)
Garage Hymnal (it's a bit different - worship music with a bit of a unique sound/style)
