I love ApologetiX! I started listening to them in high school!
I must say they're very creative--and their parodies actually match the sound of the original song. I'm pretty impressed.

My favorites by them:
"How You Rewind Me"
"Real Sin Savior"
"My God Bends to Low Places"
"Smooth Grandmama"

Oh man, there's so many...

This is either horrible or hilarious. It depends on if they are trying to be serious or not.

. . . music forum?

Also, from the YouTube videos posted, Apologetix = fail, because their name and music is (IMO) pathetic. I'm sorry, but this sort of corny stuff does not reflect well on Chistendom IMO. Also, I shan't forgive them for butchering a Queen song. Fail. Epic fail.

That was uniquely terrible.

And I sat through all 9 minutes of it, so I get an opinion.

I wondered what you were talking about until I clicked it.

"...Oh. A Queen cover."

Well, at least they're guys AMIRITE.

Well you guys may not like them, but I do. This is their ministry.
And I wouldn't say that it reflects badly on Christians. People have come to Christ as a result of their music and the ministry they do.
I agree that some of their songs can be corny, but there are some gems in there too.

While they are corny, they are still fun and hilarious.

They are the Weird Al of the Christian world. And it shows that Christians have a sense of humor and aren't stuffy.

Please don't put Weird Al on their level. Weird Al is actually good.

Why all the hate against the band? These are fellow Christians.
I know not everyone is going to like them, but that doesn't make them terrible. Some people may not like them, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't do what they do--their ministry does reach people. Everyone is used by God in different ways --these guys through parody.

And I have to say they are pretty creative with their lyrics--getting the tone to match the original song.

Sheenar wrote:Why all the hate against the band? These are fellow Christians.

We don't hate the band members, just their music. Kind of like the whole "Love the sinner, hate the sin" deal. We have nothing against them as people, just what they do.
I know not everyone is going to like them, but that doesn't make them terrible.

Sure it does. Usually people only dislike things they think are terrible. I mean, I've never disliked something I thought was awesome.

I have, however, liked things that were terrible, but usually only for their inherent cheesiness. This band isn't the cheesy type of bad, though. They're just bad.
Some people may not like them, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't do what they do

I don't think anyone commenting has said these guys should stop. Just that they suck.
And I have to say they are pretty creative with their lyrics

Creativity is not synonymous with good. If I made a video game that you controlled with your nose, that'd be pretty creative, but that doesn't mean it'd be any good.

I'm just saying that we should be supportive of our fellow Christians.

Say, if someone loved drawing--they put their heart in it, doing it for God --it was their way of ministering to people --and God used their art to change people. How would that person feel if a fellow Christian came along and said "Your art sucks". That would be pretty disheartening. Especially if it's something they really put their heart into for God.

I'm not saying we shouldn't hold Christian art/artists to a high standard of quality--but that any criticism should be constructive. We should tell them how they can improve the quality of their art. Not just say they "suck" and leave it at that.

Why don't we just chalk it up to personal taste ^____^ We all have our taste in music and that comes our opinions of others ^__^

I do agree though. I thought they were trying to be like Weird Al in a way ^__^; I did find them to be humorous. As I think they were trying to be :)

That's just me though ^^;

Sheenar wrote:I'm just saying that we should be supportive of our fellow Christians.

If we're supportive of EVERYTHING, then no change will happen, people will not be motivated to grow better, and so on.

If someone is an artist and all they ever hear is "Good job!" or "You rock!" then they're never going to change, they're never going to get better, they're never going to grow. They're going to stay the same. Considering that Christian entertainment is already inferior in every way to regular entertainment, staying the same is not a good idea.

Your fallacy here is that you assume that something that has inherent value to God also has inherent value to humans. This is completely untrue. Even if somebody put their heart into their art for God, that doesn't change the fact that their art might totally suck.

And I feel that's a problem with Christians. We're so concerned with being "nice" to everyone and not stepping on toes. I say no. If somebody sucks at something, tell them. Okay, maybe not in the sense of "This sucks, quit." But you could say, for example, "You know, I get the feeling that art really isn't your strongest talent. Have you tried other areas of creativity?" If they say "NO I LOVE ART IT IS MY LIFE" then whatever, they can't be helped.

I suck at singing. Even if I put my heart into singing for God, it still wouldn't change the fact that I sing like a dying cat. The difference is I don't release albums and try to use it to further my witness. Maybe I'll sing in the shower or under my breath, when other people can't hear it.

If a person sucks at drawing and they still want to draw for God, hey, fine, whatever. I'm just saying maybe they shouldn't be posting it on websites or public displays. Just keep it between yourself and God, eh?

By the way God can use things to change people that aren't good. God even uses sin to change people, that doesn't make sin beautiful. So even if God uses Apologetix's music or somebody's terrible art to change someone's heart, that doesn't make it good. I'm not saying that this band's music is sinful by the way. I'm just saying sometimes God uses terrible things to change us.
I'm not saying we shouldn't hold Christian art/artists to a high standard of quality--but that any criticism should be constructive.

I think constructive criticism has its place but again I feel we put too much stock in not hurting other people, and sometimes that causes problems.
We should tell them how they can improve the quality of their art.

Okay. These people can improve the quality of their art by making lyrics that don't make me want to break my headphones.

On the opposite end of the spectrum from Nate, I like this band. Back-in-the-day when I first heard their music, it gave me some things to think about. I can't say that about too many artists. Their song (Be Bold) Jeremiah is still one of my favorite songs.

I prefer to side with Nate on this subject. We need to be critical for the sake of honesty and improvement, though not necessarily in the cutting tone we have been using.

Okay seriously guys, QFT. XD It's only music; people have different tastes. XD There's no need for such a big squabble over something so trivial.

HOLY BUCKETS

I was wondering why this topic had so many replies... personally, I have enjoyed hearing a few of their songs. I'm sure if I want something really epic or whatever, then I am gonna listen to something else... but I have no problem with listening to something like this for fun here and there. I think they did a good job on some of the songs.

But the squabble is over. I understand now what Nate meant and what he was saying. And I agree with him. So there's no squabble anymore. :) I just misunderstood him.

I have heard a bit of their music. There is something to be said for taking a pretentious, self-absorbed song and turning it into a cheesy Bible story. At least, I hope that is their intention. Unfortunately, I disagree with many of the positions they mean to promote with their satire.
