I think Music CAN and does have an effect on our emotions, or at least hightens them. Wheneve rI am down I turn on some good old fashion praise and worship music. That really cheeres me up! ^o^

I guess it all depends on the person though...

A person very close to me listened to Emo music for a while, and subsequently she turned into an angrier person, now that she has stopped listening to it she seems happier.

It not only effects emotions but also your way of thinking. If you listen to bad rap music then you may start taking those words to heart. Yes, surely though as it can be destructive it can also save. Like when your at a revival and they play some song that God speaks through your heart and changes your ways (Possibly). But when bad music with offenisive lyrics are playing thats sorta like Satan talking to whomever is listening. Yeah you can listen to it as long as you know whats right and that you know won't be changed by any of the words that are playing, but with non-christians and new christians it may change their way of thinking about alot of stuff. So choose wisely when selecting music to play.

Is a good time, I think, to reproduce the lyrics of one of the last tracks of John Rutter's Requiem:

Music, the gift of the supreme God,
draws men, draws gods,
Music makes savage souls gentle
and uplifts sad minds,
Music moves the very trees and wild beasts.

Music has an undeniable power over people, for good or ill. It would be no exaggeration to say that I live and breath music and am happy to share it with others through my station Gothic and Industrial internet radio station Batcave Redemption Radio.

It MOST definitely affects your emotions. Thats why whenever you lsiten to a song you should analyze how it makes you feel and think about if that will affect your actions.

I happen to listen to alot of emo and hard rock music and usually I notice that it doesn't have a negative affect. But If Im feeling eally down I will stay away from it because it doesn't help. Instead I will listen to something like enya which is calming and soothing and helps me feel better.

so yeah it definitely does!

i think music has a great impact on how we think and feel. the more positive the music, the more positive people "tend" to think and feel, and vise-versa with depressing music. not that all of it is bad^_^ . there have been a few times where i have been sad and then desided to listen to sad music and felt even worse. Words are powerful things. God spoke the world into existance. words can help people feel better or hurt peoples feelings.

though on the other hand, sometimes i think many people exprience more of a emotional reactions then spiritcal connection. it is like hearing a really great message in church and then feeling inspired to change our life... Then after a few days, we are back to their old selfs. THe trick is taking the good message from either a song, siminar etc... of love and faith in Christ and applying it in our lives. That way, instead of just feeling moved by the message for a short time, we have a spiritcal one as well.

but yes, i do believe music can have an impact on how we feel and think.

Personally, a huge YES.

Several years ago, I bought the CD of a popular artist... won't name her here... but although I liked the music, it made me deeply depressed at a time when I was already having difficulty there and didn't need any more. Eventually I sold the CD.

I have had the opposite experience, as well.

Most 'ghetto rap' makes me want to punch stuff. Does that count?

And agreement with the DDR thing. And alot of techno-ish music now, I think. It all makes me strangely happy. :]

Music can have an altering effect on emotions. Ways of thinking? Only if you let them.

Also, this would likely be better suited for our music forum, called Jam Session. Not a big deal, could go either way.

I really like music that makes you want to get out into your world and stand up for what you believe with no fear....As well as music that could work well for an ultimate fight (my mind just get's really creative from there)

Actually with that in mind, does anyone else sometimes gets a action-packed music video in their head when they hear certain songs?

Music has a direct connection to our emotions, I believe. Nothing touches us like the right song at the right time (or the wrong song at the wrong time, depending on your point of view). For example, most movies would fail to deliver much impact with out their soundtracks.

All that said, I think music only influences our emotions. Without a pre-disposition toward an emotion, the music would have no affect. In the movie example, it’s the “willing suspension of disbelief.â€

Most definitely,

Today while jogging my goal was to endure the pain until I reached point B, so I'm nearing point B, and whazaam "HEARTS ON FIRE STRONG DESIRE RAGING DEEP WITH IN...DUN DUN DUN DUN...." my Rocky IV kicks in on my ipod and I rage past point B, start running UPHILL (you know the pain if you've ran it) go past point C and almost make it to D before my ankles have no more. It felt really good.

As far as other things, I listen to alot of Radiohead, and Thom Yorke is starting to rub off on me, so next semester all my courses are on psychology/sociology/the economy/foreign relations to try to get a better view of how we as people interact with each other.

I notice the same thing, where when I listen to real, edifying Christian music (I say that because a lot of what's called Christian today is fluff with no real substance), I feel like I've been fed spiritually and it does overall make me happier and more joyful.
I went through a phase when I was a teenager where I was listening to Alanis Morrisette (why, oh why, did I ever do that) and I noticed my attitude became darker, more depressing, and more bitter as time went on. I eventually threw the CD out.
I used to have a rule for myself that I would only listen to Christian music and nothing else, but then I started liking more musically creative, expressive music (like video game and movie soundtracks and such) and there isn't a whole lot in the creative area in Christian music. A lot of them all sound the same and for me that's just a bore. I'd love to find a Christian band as musically creative as Dream Theater. The closest I've found is Narnia.

Well, it seems like nowadays you can find at least one Christian band that fits into every genre that secular bands have...And with soundtracks....in my opinion if it doesn't have words then it's neither Christian or secular....it's just background music...But that's for another thread...now back on subject...
