Q's and concerns about this 'Gackt' fellow...

Hi there! My sisters have gotten really into jmusic in general and so have I, but I listen mostly to things such as Asian Kung-Fu Generation and Orange Range while they listen to the more 'girly' form of jrock. Recently one of my sisters has started to take a liking to two artists 'Tora' (from Alice Nine) and 'Gackt' (from ... himself?). There's not much I know yet about this Tora fellow but Gackt looks like a seriously didturbed individual. My parents know nothing about the internets or anime or Japanese stuff in general so I am supposed to 'filter' the j-stuff my sisters get into, should I be concerned about this Gackt character and what of Tora?

Any help/info is greatly appreciated.

I don't really know anything about Gackt, but wikipedia is always a good place to start looking for stuff like this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gackt

I honestly hope your sister isn't getting into anything bad, and hopefully this article (or maybe some links in the article) will help you out. Best of luck.

There's really nothing to be afraid of.

At worst, Gackt is a huge egomaniac. But nothing more than that.

Gackt's music is nothing to worry about. There's only one song, entitled Vanilla, that's objectionable. Gackt himself is quite a character, but not as crazy as he used to be. Anything "bad" you hear about him is probably from a long, long time ago.

That's good to know, I was mostly concerned because someone told me he was bi and I didn't want to go swimming through the internet searching for confirmation of that piece of information. Especially since I'm at work right now....

Oh, that's just his on-stage character.

In real life, he says he could never have a relationship with another man because it would be immoral.

His music is fine but you better watch out for Vanilla.
I like his music overall.

Oh! He is fine. Just be aware of Vanilla. Also he sure is a character, I mean he danced with cat mascots while performing Soliel, actually that video is hilarious

I heard he once bought a coat that was treated with whale skin oil and children's tears but that's just what I heard.

Just a false rumor.

Seriously, I think the poor guy has more false urban legends attached to him than Marilyn Manson does... and that's saying something.

The "toe of all evil"? It seems to be the general consensus that his music is ok, with the exception of 'Vanilla' (I looked up the lyrics....um....no comment), and he himself is ok as well. Unless he is the toe of evil, in which case I will be forced to apply the toenail clipper of morality.

Seriously, I read his bio on wikipedia and that man had one screwed up childhood, so it makes sense for him to be a bit...off.

Really? I don't watch Family Guy.

Even so, my second point stands.

Not really.

Oh, you mean in Japan?

In America, pretty much citizen has heard of Marylin, but I don't think I know anyone personally who is aware of Gackt's existence.

But yeah, your point stands, just not in this country. I mean, Wikipedia doesn't even have his age.

You know him in person?

The only bad thing about gackt... is that he looks like he is having a seizure whenever he tries to dance. I wouldn't worry past that.

So far as I can tell, the only deal with Gackt is that he's basically made his image a sort of modern Japanese incarnation of David Bowie's androgynous Ziggy Stardust character. When anyone challenges conventional gender roles by bluring the lines to some extent (and thus appropriating some social roles assigned to the other gender), some people will (often wrongly) assume it is because this person is homosexual or practices some sort of sexual deviancy. In my own opinion, in these times when the pressures of everyday life require one to be more flexible in what social roles one performs, if anything moderately androgynous figures are a good influence.

Sorry for topic rez... (says the newb without a userpic or signature, how embarrassing)
Tom Dincht wrote:I mean, Wikipedia doesn't even have his age.

That is because nobody knows his age. Gackt jokes that he is a vampire born on July 4th, 1540.

'Tora' (from Alice Nine) and 'Gackt' (from ... himself?)

My gosh I love Tora. Also, Gackt is the former vocalist of Malice Mizer. When Malice Mizer split up, he started his own solo career and started "GacktJOB" with a few other men as his support band (such as You, Chachamaru, Ren, etc.). But generally when one sees Gackt in concert, nobody says "GacktJOB" they just say "Gackt".

As others have stated, beware of the song "Vanilla", but also the song "Papa Lapped a Pap Lopped", it has a good tune but uh... nevermind, just don't let her listen to it XD;.

About Gackt's character, he's not a bad guy. He's a bit eccentric, but he's not nuts. He's actually seriously hilarious and has the best sense of humour around.

And on his dancing, that's one thing he seems to be famous for (among fans)-- his poor dancing. My friends and I call it the "Gackt Attack". He was actually a much better dancer back when he was in Malice Mizer, maybe because those songs had more meaning than his solo stuff.

If she starts listening to Malice Mizer, the only song (and video!) I can think of that you'd want to keep her away from is "Illuminati" and I believe that speaks for itself.

I'm'a shut up now >_>.

Wow, sounds like Gackt is a very interesting individual. Just a lot of false crap about him.
Heh, leave it to me to believe the rumors. :eyeroll:
Eh, being wrong's not that bad. XD!

I agree with everyone, Gackt is okay but Vanilla is pretty raunchy and the video is just plain disturbing. He's definitely visual kei! Malice Mizer (his band) WAS a visual kei original.

He only says that to deter fangirls.

He was married once, but the fangirls annoyed his wife so she divorced him. Poor guy.
