Band Names (Namez? Knames?)

Something I was considering just now: A good many bands these days use misspelled words in their names. Personally, I am not really impressed by this and, in fact, it is generally more likely to turn me away from a band that might be good otherwise.

So, regardless of whether you like the music of such bands, what do you all think of the practice of intentionally misspelled words in band names? Is it inane? Is it cool? Does it just depend?

I think it's stupid.

The only good band I know of that does that is Katatonia.

IMHO, it makes them look like morons. I'm not entirely sure why, it's just always the way I've thought of it.

On the other hand, you would have names like Deaf Leopard

Of course in the real world, we talk about the importance of spelling... and then go to businesses like "Suzi;s EZ All nite donut shoppe

Actually, I think Def Leppard is the only one that I don't find to be a retarded name. LOL.

Can anyone else think of any decent ones?

"The Beatles" maybe?

Ah, but that was a play on words, rather than a misspelling for its own sake.

Well, someone stole my Def Leppard nomination, so how about some other intentionally misspelled band names that don't suck? OBserve:
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd (it's a misspelling of their high school coach's name, IIRC)
  • Led Zeppelin (they were originally going to go with "Lead", but Jones was worried their name would be mispronounced)

Linkin Park used that spelling because a http://www.lincolnpark.[NOT A REAL LINK]com website would have been really expensive.

The best band name is Dream Theater.

Actually, both "theater" and "theatre" are correct spellings.

 I love that email. It's one of my favorites.

But, yeah, I guess there are some cool ones. I suppose that it is one of those things that is a very tenuous idea. The line between good and entirely inane is a fine one.

Eric: Reminds me of Theatre of Tragedy. You like death metal. Do you listen to them?

Yep, but I only have Aegis.

I don't know, I think its easier to remember them if they at least make their name look original, if not sound to creative, like Monkees and Fixx. But the ones that Shiroi mentioned do sound like a pitiful effort to be "cool," even though they can't think of a cool name.

The ones that Shiroi mentioned were actually fictional bands from the Strong Bad email "band names":

http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail16.html

Eric: Aegis is great, but you should really check out their eponymous album and Velvet Darkness They Fear. By the time Aegis came out, they had lost their death metal vox and the hard edge on their music as well.

LOL, Sakura-hime. What I really want to know is what a thousand foot krutch (crutch?) is supposed to mean. On the other hand, there are a lot of band names which make no sense at all:

Strawberry Alarm Clock
Chocolate Watchband
Iron Butterfly
Better Than Ezra (seriously....who the heck is this Ezra person?)

Led Zeppelin, need I say more? It was originally Lead Zeppelin, but of course there was confusion with it sounding like "leed."
