a really REALLY odd question...

For all the music-lovers out there, this is your place to swap lyrics, talk about new bands and jazz about concerts. All things related to the audio world belong here.

a really REALLY odd question...

Postby Tenshi no Ai » Fri Aug 05, 2005 10:41 pm

Ok it's a music related question and it's something I've never really understood :/

Anyhow, why is it (for any kind of music Christian and secular) that is there's a song you like that comes on or certain lyrics that really... hit you I guess you can like, get goosebumps and even feel cold and shiver from it?

*shrugs* I said it was weird, but music related! But I'm sure there's SOME out there that get what I'm talking about. I dunno... just wondering about an explination cause when I was singing today for music practice at church tonight, how in even the extreme heat can a certain lyric hits ya, I felt a rush of cold... (and it happens with secular songs too!)

Anyone... know or know what I'm talking about? I'm just curious^^

EDIT: *tumbleweed blows bye* yup, guess it's too weird a topic :/

I don't know why (I didn't want to leave you with no responses ^^). I have felt what you mentioned, during a kickin' song, or during a song that really touches you, you just feel that...shiver, or rush, or whatever it is that you feel.

I think there's something to be said for the power that music holds over us, even lyricless music can inspire fear, love, hatred, peacefulness, sadness, what have you. There's probably something very supernatural about music and how it affects us, which we probably will never understand until we get to Heaven (if at all).

Yup. There's a heavy metal instrumental from one of my favourite games (and the tracks are redbook audio! Awesome! *wields ripper*) with a particularly rich ending and layers of sound on top of layers with just palpably thick and sumptuous harmonics. I still get shivers and chills listening to it. Glorious.

*nods vigorously* Although I can't explain the reason for it, sorry xD I do say that I have to agree with what kaemmerite has to say about the matter, though.

I like to wrap myself in the blanket of chords and harmonies all day every day n_n That feeling is why I'm a performer. I find God, or rather, God finds me through music. I think that's why I experience those feelings.

Ooo yay! Went from 0 responses to 7! That's a good thing... but at least people know what I'm comign from. Knew there'd be some that had that feeling too but you know to some people it might be like "The heck are you talking about? It's just music!"

Music's cool though. The sounds of plucked strings and banging drums and bass... (I LOVE bass! It just makes a song what it is!) but like, it sure can give you a good feeling^^

I think getting goosebumps / shiver when certain music / lyrics touch you is a common human experience.

If there is a Philosophy of Music people may try to explain it in formal terms (is there such a field by the way?).

I've noticed this before. There are some songs that give me that shiver, like "Nothing But Skin" by Blindside, "Daylight" by Brave Saint Saturn, "Every New Day" by Five Iron Frenzy, "The Crowing" by Coheed and Cambria, and "Stabbing Art To Death" by Showbread, to name a few.

Lyrics never really hit me. I sometimes believe I wouldnt care if the singer were babbling- hoo hee yaa maa goo rah nah! Its the actual music that strikes me. The music I listen to tend to be on the more upbeat side, so I get more of a hyper energetic feeling rather than a deep shiver. You know?

I can't give any examples right now, but I certainly have gotten that feeling before. Not only with music, but also with movies and other things.
