In Norway, it's legal to download - but not upload. anyway, that law is under debate - and soon it will be illegal to download too...

anyway, it's legal to make mp3 and divx for personal use from cd's and DVD's you own.

Question about burning CDs...

The law says it's illegal to burn CDs and share them with friends, but is it illegal to burn CDs from family members? (I.E. my close cousin in town, or my sister at home) HELP!

Yeah, it's basically illegal to copy any professionally produced CD (unless you somehow have permission), especially if it's for the purposes of sharing (whether you're going to give it to friends/family or keeping a copy and returning the original to a friend).

Actually, it is legal to copy a CD for YOUR OWN USE, IE to keep the original in its case to keep it from getting damaged.

It's illegal to burn cd's for anyone but yourself.*

*No one cares though.

That's unfortunatly very true, but that doesn't make it right. Keeping a spare copy of your CDs ripped on your computer in case something happens to them is perfectly legal - as compiling your own burned CD from music you already own. As others have said, where it becomes illegal is when you start giving it to other people.

There is nothing bad about mp3's themselves. It's just a format for data.
