Fads you Remember

Since I don't want to post just a depression topic and I've been thinking of posting this for a while...

What are some fads you remember - from recent years, from childhood... what are some of the fads you miss? What ones are you glad are gone?

I remember...

Cabbage Patch Kids (I used to collect them as a kid!)

Garbage Pail Kids (My mom wouldn't let me get those cards! I wanted them, too!)

POGS (You know, those little lid-disk things kids used to flip and play for? I was never in the fad, just had little cousins who were into it, bigtime)

Troll Dolls (particularly ones with jewels in their bellies. All the rage when I was in Jr. High)

Bubble Necklaces (Jr. High... all the girls just HAD to have little glass bottles on cords they could blow bubbles from with a bubble wand on the lids)

Giga Pets (more recent trend that is now dead. I remember there were two types: Pets you'd raise and if you neglected them, they died, and a little "ghost" pet you could raise to be an angel - if you neglected it, it would turn into a devil).

Pokemon (still going on)

Digimon (still kinda going on)

Slap braclets (my Jr. High years)

Friendship braclets (I think every generation since the 60s have had these)

Day-Glo (80s fashion disaster!)

Spandex (another WRONG 80s thing)

Mile-high bangs on girls (80s hairstyle... I still laugh when I see my sister's Senior picture)

Jelly shoes (again, blame the 80s)

Mossimo (high school skater fashion)

Big Johnson (offensive high school fashion, popular with boys. If you dont' know the hidden meaning, I'm not going to tell you... not appropriate for this board.)

Hmmm... that's all I remember for now. That's a lot!

I remember when the catchphrase was "tight". Everything was "tight" in 4th grade.
Tomagachi--kinda like the gigapets. Same idea anyway.
Spice Girls--better part of junior high was spent around fangirls
Wow, I guess I'm such a trendsetter I don't remember any more :lol:

(in other words, I didn't pay too much attention to the world when I was a kid unless it was in the form of a book)

The 80s were the mother of a lot of horrible fashions... *shudder*

For a while it was a fad for guys to wear their shorts so low you could see half their boxers... PLEASE tell me that's not still in fashion. That was the dumbest fad ever....

Torn jeans... I had this great pair of jeans that were ripped all to shreds and had pretty butterfly patches here and there.

Heh. Tomagachi (we called it Tamaguchi, though) and POGS. XD I feel so grade school.

Polly Pocket - I had a pretty good collection of those wee houses. ^^;;

Stickers/Stationery - sticker albums and about a ream of stationery paper, my most precious possessions. LOL! Those were like money back in school.

Tex - tiny cardboard cutouts about half the size of my palm with anime prints. Served as trading cards. We used to gamble with them. I had SO MUCH of Yuyu Hakusho, which was the most popular anime back then.

Lami - bigger anime prints made of film paper and laminated. Cost a great deal more than tex but it certainly made you look classier.

Tansan - what we called bottle caps. There was a wildness for them for some time and I did my share in collecting them too.

NERDS - the candy.

Power Rangers - my friend had all the toy merchandise that ever existed.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - I was so wild about them, lol.

Ultraman/Magmaman/Shaider/Kamen Rider - Japanese sentai dubbed in the local language. I couldn't miss an episode. XD

G-shock/multi-functional watches - I think I started that trend when I came home from Hong Kong with a Baby-G strapped on my wrist.

oh i thought of another one... those aweful furbys. they never shut up!!! mine got sooo annoying that i took that batterys out of it... i never could get mine to say anything anyways. i guess i'm a bad furby mom.

Almost forgot...tops. Every guy worth his salt had to have one. Eventually the fad spread to the girls as well. I got one and I played fairly okay, but I still never could make it spin on my palm properly without hurting myself. :lol:

Oh, and garters too. All the girls played it. Well, except me. I could never remember the exhibitions right.

Playing cards too. There was such a rage for them during grade school. I remember I always had a pack of cards with me, looking for someone to play blackjack with.

I remember Ninja Turtles! I was going to mention them and forgot.

The watch thing brings up another fad memory for me. Swatches. Remember those? Everyone had to have a Swatch.

Here some fads I remembered:

Tickle Me Elmo Dolls- I remembered on Christmas that people where litteraly fighting over those dolls.

Yo-Yo's- A fad that seems to surface from time to time. Only trick I can do was walk the dog. :shady:

J.A. trend- Never got this one. People doing stupid stuff to get kicks. I was there when people on my highschool did it but never did those tricks. I was the one laughing at them for doing something that stupid.

Slang Words- Words like "Thats off the chain", "Yo G" *who was G?*, and "I'm straight"

One fad that sticks out in my brains is pokemon cards...I think I still have my collection of like 400 from the 4th grade in the top of my closet. I meant to sell them, but I don't think anybody really wants them anymore.

You might try offering them on eBay... You never know what people will buy, or what people will pay!

Another bad fad... New Kids on the Block. I remember one Christmas, my aunt (who I didn't see very often, so she didn't know any better) sent me interchangable NKOTB watches. Yes, you heard me right. :eyeroll:

Luckily she wasn't there when I opened it. :sweat:

Yu-Gi-Oh trading cards- Ehhh...this one is still sorta going on

W.W.J.D. bracelets- really ticked me off because a bunch of people didn't know what it meant and wore it for fashion, but I guess maybe they helped spread knowledge...

Crop tops- thank goodness they are out of fashion where I live, it took forever!

Veggie Tales- awww....I wish they were still popular....

Pacifier necklaces. Mainly girls wore them. I talked to a girl once who was wearing one and tried desperately to explain the difference between fad and style (she had insisted it was a style). Of course, she didn't get it.

Wallabees - high top shoes from the 70s that were soft suede. I loved those shoes. The most comfortable shoes I ever had. I doubt we will ever see them again.

We have thousands of Pokemon cards, and I still think they look cool.

I believe this has been said, but about 4 or 5 years ago, every kid in my town from K to 12 HAD to have a yo-yo. And you were really special if you could do all the fancy tricks. But a year later, the strings were wore out and nobody really cared anymore.

Lol, yes! Looking back at pictures when I was 6-9 I ALWAYS had a side ponytail! XD And I used to have (or my mom did) those circular metal things with a bar through the middle that you would use to tye up the t-shirts.

Let's see... BEANIE BABIES. They still make 'em, but they're not so popular anymore. I remember when one's worth in elementary school depended on the size of their beanie baby collection. I had over 100, but slowly I've been getting rid of them at yard sales and stuff...

I also had (and still have) over 500 pokemon cards. Must find some way to make money off them. :lol:
