Anybody want to learn Hiten Mitsurugi Style?

Postby Heart of Sword » Sat May 22, 2004 8:10 am

Also called "Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu." An ancient style of the sengoku that pits one against many.

I can do a lot of moves as I practice it a lot. If anyone wants any advice on doing them, I might be able to help.

You'll need either a wooden practice sword, a branch that won't break, or a cardboard sword (that's not floppy). All of which around 2 feet long.

This isn't to teach Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu for roleplaying, it's for real. Some attacks/techniques won't be as fast as anime characters have more freedom, but about 90% of them are possible.

Please don't attempt moves in rooms with ceiling fans. ;^^x

You can practice it outside. ;^^x Just please, if you have any dogs outside, make sure they don't bite the sword. (it's happened to me)\

Anyway if there's anything you want to know, ask me and I'll give you a detailed tutorial on how to do it (if I know what move it is). So far I know most of the techniques but there may be a few that I haven't attempted yet.

As I said before...sounds fun. :) I've always been interested in weaponry and martial arts...since I was five. I almost started once, with the help of some friends, but it fell through. My sister takes after me...I'm afraid she's really going to hurt herself one day. I've learned from experience not to attempt it. :) I've run in to almost anything you can think of, hit my head, whacked myself in the face...and pretty much for nothing, as I don't really know what I'm doing. :P

So it's a real style...fascinating...

I'd love to learn some of Kenshin's techniques to incorporate into my own style...

I just try to accumulate techniques that appeal to me.

Self-taught really. Mostly just from watching Kenshin and others.

I'd love to learn iaijutsu though. Maybe Bokuden's legendary Hitotsu-Tachi (single cut) style. But it's a dead style.

yeah... i would like to know how to send out the shock wave across the ground. do i need much experience channeling my ki.
However on a slightly more realistic note Iaido, or way of the sword reminds me oh Kenshins style. In that style you learn moves of attack from sitting and sheathed sword and finishing moves. One part of its curriculum was the fast draw and instant use of the sword, either in self-defence or as a pre-emptive strike. A typical form consists of the draw and cut, a finishing cut, cleaning the blade and returning it to the scabbard, all without looking away from the imaginary opponent. Yet I don’t think you would learn as much in it as in a basic Kendo class…

What, his counterattack that broke Hanya's mask? I think it was a backhanded strike with the right hand, combined with a step ahead and to the left.

I think the stance is pretty simple. You stand with your feet a bit more than shoulder-width apart, sword held out parallel to the ground in front of you. Don't forget the death-glare.

Two boxers. They're insane.

0_0x No! I'm not having people do that.

The shock wave? Can't do that unless you have a real sword and a special type of floor. That's one of the 10% of moves that can't really be done.

The infamous "death glare" is simple and tends to freak people out. Go completely straight-faced, narrow your eyes just a little bit, and stare into their eyes. (no, your eyes don't glow yellow  , but it's good for unsettling people before striking)

I'm glad I don't have dogs...my tortoise is enough to deal with.
Of course, your effort is well rewarded with dogs, whereas with tortoises...they hate you no matter what you do. But right when I start to wish I would have gotten rid of him, he does something really cute...and then, other times, he reminds me of an old man.

I think I've already mastered that one. :) It's quite useful when attempting to frighten the people who make me angry. That's how I got the nickname "cat-eyes".
It seems to unnerve people like you say...I only wish I knew what it looked like. :P
I've tried doing it in the mirror, but I'm not angry at myself, so it's hard to focus. :)
It kind of hurts my eyes to glare that way...everything around me blurs except for the point I'm focusing on.

However, I don't do it the same way...I look silly when I narrow my eyes.
Instead, I keep them wide open, and tilt my head forwards a little, which creates a deep shadow under my brow. My eyes do turn yellow, to a certain degree...my eyes are a mixture of yellow, blue, green and brown.

Hmm...I've got a list of techniques I'd like to learn...

Shihara Dori (muahaha) Where one catches one's opponent's sword between one's palms.

Ryu Kan Sen (Dragon Wind Up Flash)

Ryu Tsui Sen (Dragon Hammer Flash)

Too bad the Ku Zu Ryu Sen (Nine Headed Dragon Flash) is impossible, it'd be too cool to hit with 9 strikes at once.

Shihara Dori (muahaha) Where one catches one's opponent's sword between one's palms.
Very possible but don't try it with real swords as it's very dangerous if you fail. When the sword is swung down, put your hand on top on the blunt edge. Quickly pull your hand to the side so that the blade's side is up against your palm, then clap your other palm on the other side of the blade. Press your hands together. (note: must be done quickly)

Ryu Kan Sen (Dragon Wind Up Flash)
I haven't attempted it yet.

Ryu Tsui Sen (Dragon Hammer Flash)
One of the easiest ones to perform, believe it or not. Hold the sword over your head and behind your back. Leap as high and far toward your opponent as you can (yelling something, even just a battle cry, will help as it will startle them, making them more vulnerable). Swing the sword down as you fall. As soon as the sword hits the target/the ground, pull it back up into a fighting position so that you can attack right after.

Too bad the Ku Zu Ryu Sen (Nine Headed Dragon Flash) is impossible, it'd be too cool to hit with 9 strikes at once.
Well, it is possible, you just can't hit all at the same time. Just hit the opponent as fast as you can.

Cool! When performing the Ryu Tsui Sen, I'd probably call out the attack's name. It worked for Kenshin.

I wonder how one lands after springing from the wall IRL? Real life's a bit different than the laws-of-physics-optional world of anime.

Twist just enough so that your feet are beneath you. Land in a half-squatting position so you can jump/spring/attack again. ^^x (this is tricky though!)
