Before going into the seminary I attended a private Baptist university in Phoenix called Grand Canyon University. It is a liberal arts college. I don't know how their art program is, but it's a good school.

I typed in "christian art college" on google and got a few that looked close. I know the college I went to was both Christian AND had an art program, but that was not the main focus of the institution... I would tend to think that a school whose primary focus is on art would be a better choice.

Also, when you request information about a college's art program - ask for 2 pieces of data:
1. How many students graduate per year from the school.
2. How many of those are art majors.

Genereally speaking, the school with the highest percentage of graduates form the art program will have a better program. Why? Colleges allocate resouces based on what area of the college has the most students. Usually this results in a better program. There are two scenareos where this is not the case.
1. The college is inept (not too likely).
2. The college is just trying to get an art program off the ground.

Anyway, HIH!

Try Duke University (NC), Julliard (if you are really that serious), or Furman University (SC). Sorry, I can't help much.

You've got a lot of time, so don't fret yourself too much. You should begin by thinking what type of art you're interested in. e.g. graphic design, fine arts, art history, etc. Different schools will have different specializations. Unfortunately, unless you're interested in Canadian schools, I can't really help you on where to go(the subject is somewhat out of my field in any case)

My personal advice would be to go to the best school that you can get into, regardless of whether or not it is a specifically Christian school. That's where the best students and professors will go to, and what you can learn by interacting with them is of immeasurable worth.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Now that I think of it, my seminary offers a course in iconography. If only I had some artistic talent. :shake:

I want to become a manga artist, unless the Lord leads me otherwise, and that's true, I have a long time to figure it out.

However, though I do want a good art course, that will teach me what I need, the amount of people who get good jobs from the school doesnt concern me. Why I specificly want a christian art college, is because, quite frankly, some of the stuff secular art colleges do sickens me. (Like bringing in live models for nude figure study), I don't really care what they think about it, I believe it's wrong, veiwing the human body as an object, a specimen for study.

*Sigh*

But the Lord has it all figured out, I suppose he will provide what I need for what he want's me to do, but I never hurts to look.

(As for everyone else, thank you for your suggestions, I'll look into it, not that I'm not thanking the other people for their help too.)

Having been through a pretty rough college experience, I will now give you all the wisdom I have pertaining to this matter. (smiling slyly)

I got to tell you, the absolute best thing you can do is pray. I'm dead serious about this. We all hear about how important prayer is, but it is a completely different thing to put it into practice and realize how much the Lord loves us.

Ask the Lord what he would have you to do, where to go, whether to live on campus or off, and you know what? When the time comes, you'll know exactly what to do. You may not hear or feel anything pertaining to college for a while but don't get discouraged because I can sit here and say that he is a rewarder of those that dillegently seek Him and His will for their lives.

I didn't consult the Lord about where to go to school and it was a very costly mistake I made. Not only did I leave before school even started, I fell into a mild depression where I sat in my room all last semester and slept late every day and I put on quite a bit of weight. Now there was a lot of things I could have done differently but I've learned from those mistakes.

Always put the Lord first in every decision you make and you will not stray off of the path that you'll have the most peace in. Will it be a cakewalk? Not always. Will there be times when you wonder why you are where you are? Quite possibly. But all in all, He loves us so much that He gave His son's life as a ransom,so what good thing would he withhold from us? Nothing at all.

You know, prayer is important because it lets God know we are seeking him in the decicions we make in our lives. But some times you need to make a choice.
If the college that you will go to is layed out in Gods Sovereign Will, then there will be no getting around it. One way or another God will see that you are there. But many decisions we face in our lives fall into Gods Moral Will. No matter what we choose God will be glorified. Ofcourse as a mature Christian you need to consider you choice carefully. If the school you wish to attend is known for drinking and partying and, well, things that may cause you to sin (or move away from God) then you should know those to be the wrong choces.
But if several schools are available that would be considered pleasing to God. Then the choice is up to you. God wants us to live our lives to Glorify him, he wants us to take the lessions we have been learning and apply them to our selves and our decisions daily. If you pick a School that you are misserable at, stop and think about why. God doesnt always allow us to travel the easy path. Strive to bring glory to Him in everything, not just the safe and easy.
Im sure what every choice you make, when made in faith, will ultimately bring Glory to God and blessings apon you.

Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

The Christian college I went to was known as a party school... drinking and drugs included. I never saw much of that, personally... I think it all depends on who you hang out with, what kind of roommates you end up with, etc.

Keep in mind that just because a college is Christian doesn't mean that everyone who goes there is.... Likewise, just because a college is secular doesn't mean it would be a bad choice for you. God may lead you to a secular school, so don't rule them out entirely.

Even at a secular university you can try to find a christian roomate and rent a place off campus if the dorm environment worries you. I have several friends who go to ASU, probably the biggest party college in America, but they live off campus in Christian households and it works out great for them.

Most campuses will also have a variety of Christian clubs or church organizations that are active. You can be as involved with them as you like. In addition, some universities (like my own) may have a dorm building reserved for people who want a quiet environment (or a noisier one, like Whidden Hall which formed the inspiration for the film "Animal House", but I digress).

Personally, I think there are benefits to going to a school with a more diverse outlook and student body. In any case, most art schools will probably require nude studies as part of your basic artistic education. I don't think that there is anything demeaning about that per se, especially given the many great works of art that celebrate the human form. But I'm sure that the artists here could tell you more.

You will find a college, don't worry about it! I had several choices, but God just gave me a certain peace about the one I now go to and I haven't regretted it since! I have made great freinds and all the professors and people there are so nice and wanting to help you in any way, I am so thankful to Him! You will know the right college when you see it. God will lead you to where He wants you to go to fulfill His will in your life. Don't worry, I had no clue when I was a freshman either! lol You have plenty of time! ^_^

Thanks for the encouragement.

Indeed, God's will is best, and I will seek him about this.

Concerning the advice about not choosing a place that would cause me to sin or tempt me, nude studies (at this point of my life, anyway) would do that.

But the Lord has it all planned out, I just get so dang impatent some times. :P

Well said, Technomancer. There is nothing wrong or dirty about the human body. (I speak from the viewpoint of someone who is just finishing up a quarter of Life Drawing... i.e., nude studies. I'm going to take it again next quarter, because I learned a lot in that class and have much more to learn.) The way I see it, being ashamed of our nakedness was a result of the Fall. We are redeemed in Christ Jesus... the Curse no longer applies to us. Now, that doesn't mean I'm going to throw my clothes to the wind and walk around in my "freedom," but neither will I see the human body as dirty or shameful. People sometimes use it as such, but in itself, there is nothing wrong with it. God created us that way; we were all born nude and innocent.

With that said... If it would cause you to sin or stumble, then you shouldn't take Life Drawing. Pray about it; the Lord may change your heart if that is the way you need to go eventually. But if you're not ready for it, don't do it.

Good advice, it's not that I see the human form as a dirty thing at all. What I meant is that I believe bringing in live nude models is wrong, not because the naked form is shameful. But a person's body is'nt something that should be shared openly like that, it's something only they and their spouse should see.

Ok, I'v spoken my mind, I don't mean to start a debate, so let's end it there.
