Greetings guys. I came up with an idea as I was painting my Lord of the Rings miniatures yesterday. I thought it would be cool if I used them to recreate historical battles. Keep in mind that my types of troops are limited.

The first one will have some historical inaccuracies. The ones to follow will be more accurate.

Let us begin!

Roman forces represented by Men of Gondor.
Carthagian forces represented by Easterlings, Riders of Rohan, and Orcs.
Battle of Canae
August 2 216 BC
Location: Roman Italy
Belligerants: Roman Republic under the command of Gaius
Carthaginian Republic under the command of Hannibal Barca

The Romans have suffered two majors losses to Hannibal's armies during the 2nd Punic War. Hannibal is determined to crush Rome. Rome raises a formidable force of over 80,000 men, outnumbering Hannibal's 50,000 strong army.

At Canae, the two forces meet.

Hannibal's forces deploy in a long thin line.

The Roman forces deploy in a deeper formation.

Hannibal's cavalry ride out behind enemy lines.

The Romans begin their assault! (continued on next post).

The battle begins!

Image

Hannibals gradually gives the Romans more ground. The Romans believe they are defeating Hannibal, but he is actually drawing them into a trap. Hannibal begins to slowly reorganize his troops' formation.
Image

Hannibal moves his army into a crescent shaped formation. The Romans pour in, attempting to crush his forces. However they are too tightly packed, and cannot fight properly. Thus the Romans are forced into a narrow formation, and Hannibal attacks both of their flanks.

Meanwhile, Hannibal's cavalry defeats the Roman cavalry(sorry didn't have Gondorian Knights, so I had to use infantry instead).

Image

Hannibal's cavalry attacks the Roman's rear. The Romans are now completely trapped.
Image

The Romans are slaughtered in great numbers. 70,000 Romans lie dead.

Image

Only a few Romans managed to break through the Carthagian lines and escape.
