Speed Racer was in the Macy Parade!

Not-So-Daily Link of the Day: The iconic Mach 5 car of the Speed Racer (Mach Go Go Go) anime series rode through the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in Manhattan for the first time on Thursday. The car joined giant balloons of Pikachu with a Pokéball from Pokémon and Sanrio's "Super Cute Hello Kitty."

So did anyone here see it? It does my otaku heart proud when I see anime represented in the Macy's parade. It prooves we're still part of the pop culture. The car looked so lifelike! And I can't believe Hello Kitty and I are the same age.

I seen it and thought why didn't they get the actors that played the parts in the movie to be the driver and passenger. As many actors they had on the floats why not them.

Well, one of them was in Lost. (The guy who played Racer X also plays Jack on Lost) Maybe he was too busy filming the final season. I don't know about the rest of the cast.

From my understanding, the car is owned by a car collector as it was custom built and I don't think that a car collector would have wanted an actor to drive a car that they have never been used to driving.

My Otaku heart will burst with pride when I see a giant Evangelion Unit-01 floating through Manhattan Island. I'll even settle for a giant Shining Finger Gundam!

But, I have to admit, I did feel a bit warm and fuzzy inside when I saw Pikachu and the Pokeball floating along with the old-school "Pokemon" theme song playing.

On a related subject, am I the only one to see the irony of the Pokeball being shown with Pikachu, considering that Pikachu hates being inside a Pokeball and hasn't been inside one since episode 1?

I had a warm and fuzzy feeling on the inside yesterday as well. But it wasn't an otaku feeling, just heartburn and gas.

Give it a few years. With all of the so called Live action movies that are going to be base from anime. You may see more down the road at parades in the US.

I didn't see it. The only thing I have EVER seen from the Macy Parade is the Rick Roll they did, and only on YouTube...and even then I have trouble remembering if it was the Macy's Day Parade or not.

I remember a Macy's parade way back in the 60s that they had a young boy dressed as Astro Boy on a float.
What about a Gigantor balloon. There may be a history of Macy's parade balloon somewhere to see flew over the years.

I'd love to see how the parade commentators explain that one and its series of origin. They have enough trouble describing stuff like WALL-E. Choice quote from a past parade:
"Wally" is a Disney computer robot movie sent to clean the Earth!
