It's Guy Fawkes Day

It's Guy Fawkes Day

Postby Yamamaya » Thu Nov 05, 2009 10:10 am

Remember, remember the fifth of November,
The gunpowder treason and plot,
I know of no reason
Why the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

So let's celebrate by getting out some ole Guy Fawkes masks and complain about Parliament. :)

Eh, I think Novemeber 5th is a pretty cool guy. He afraid of anything and doesn't blow up parliament.

If the only reason you know about this holiday is because of V for Vendetta, take a shot.

*doesn't need to take a shot*

So, the V costumes they sell for halloween? Yeah. They make the mask. And theymake the hat. But they can't make it so you can wear the mask and the hat at the same time. How lame is that?

A shot of what, sir?

I'm going to watch the movie later this evening.

A couple weeks ago, before Halloween, I saw a dude walking down the street carrying a Guy Fawkes mask. If I had one of those I'd be wearing it, not carrying it. XD

I learned about this holiday from the V for Vendetta comic book. Do I have to take a shot?

Also, I'm curious, has anyone here actually celebrated this day in the proper British manner?

There were some Ron Paul supporters wearing Guy Fawkes masks and standing on the street corner with signs by my house. They were cool and had style.

I would think that it would be hard to do, since over there its Firework Night. At this time of the year in the US, its kind of hard to shot off fireworks and not get in trouble for it.

I'm not British, but I'll take any excuse I can to burn people in effigy and shoot off fireworks. Them Brits really know how to party.

I learned about this in English History 221. It's a bizarre thing to celebrate.

Random 17th century Englishman wrote:Hooray! James I is saved! He's not a bad guy, but I sure wish Elizabeth was still alive.

James I was so worried about assassination attempts that he wore a quilted doublet. After the gunpowder plot failed, he had his quarters padded with down pillows in case of explosion. Like that would help.

Last year we had a bonfire where we burned an effigy of Guy Fawkes. No fireworks, but still. :P

Pfft, I had no idea V had anything to do with this. And I had no idea this here even existed until a few hours ago.

Guy Fawkes. Who now?

Do British students know American history? :P

Honestly, it's sort of disturbing to burn an effigy of somebody. Very strange holiday overall. Also, due to reading more about Guy Fawkes, I now know what drawing and quartering is. I wish I didn't.

Actually, I think they do. It's been my understanding that for whatever reason American History is taught in a lot of parts of the world, which always struck me as one more reason why Americans need to be taught more about the rest of the world.

So I'm confused.

People in this thread seem to be saying "Let's celebrate Guy Fawkes Day!" and singing the verse. Okay, cool. But THEN they turn around and say to put on some masks and complaining about Parliament. HUBBADUHWHA?

Guy Fawkes Day (Night really but whatever) is a celebration of his FAILURE. The holiday exists to cheer the fact that he didn't do it. Further, the song is about how Guy Fawkes should die horribly and that everyone should hate him.

I think some people here are thinking this holiday is in honor of him, but it's NOT. It's in DIShonor of him. If you agree with Guy Fawkes or like him you would NOT celebrate this holiday, in fact, it would anger and upset you.

So I'm confused. Celebrating Guy Fawkes on Guy Fawkes Day would be like celebrating Arbor Day by burning a tree.
