Brooke Greenberg: The Girl Who Never Ages

She is 16 years old, but looks like an infant and has the mental capacity of a toddler. Doctors and scientists are fascinated by Brooke Greenberg, who has failed to grow or develop in any conventional way. And she has yet to be diagnosed with a known genetic syndrome or chromosomal abnormality that would explain the mystery.

Dr. Richard Walker of the University of South Florida College of Medicine observed some of the inconsistencies of Brooke's development; despite being 16, she still has baby teeth and her bone age, inexplicably, is estimated to be 10 years old. He explains, "There've been very minimal changes in Brooke's brain. Various parts of her body, rather than all being at the same stage, seem to be disconnected."

Additionally, Brooke has gone through a series of medical emergencies where her recovery, at this point, is ambiguous: seven perforated stomach ulcers, brain seizures, strokes, and a brain tumor. Her father, Howard Greenberg, comments on her resiliency:

"We were preparing for our child to die. We were saying goodbye. And, then, we got a call that there was some change; that Brooke had opened her eyes and she was fine. There was no tumor. She overcomes every obstacle that is thrown her way."

Brooke's hair and her nails are the only two things that grow, Howard said. "She has pajamas and outfits that are 10 or 12 years old," he said.

One of the things she loves most is movement. As Brooke lies on her stomach, Carly often steers her through the house on an ottoman. Brooke also likes to push against open kitchen drawers until they slam shut.

In her crib, "she's very content," Howard said. "She has very little conception of time."

The family has placed a small television near the crib so she can watch whenever she pleases. Her father gets up in the middle of each night to check on her.

It is real, though I think it's foolish to call her the "Fountain of Youth".

Wow... that's crazy.

I've seen something similar, where they seem to stop growing at 4 years old, and they don't have any strength in their legs, but stopping at THAT age is a lot more strange...

The ones I knew that stopped at about 5 years old don't usually live to be older than 20, and they never learn to talk (usually) or walk without assistance.

Now I'm starting to wonder if Benjamin Button's situation can really happen. That would be scary.:wow!:

I can't find any medical journals about her... but that doesn't take away the possibility of this being true..

I agree with that. Its like a revere version of Werner syndrome or Progeria. But when they family took her to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and did geneticists sequenced testing of her DNA, it came out normal unlike the mutated versions of DNA that patients have Werner syndrome or Progeria.

Its still an unexplained condition, but the doctors have called it "Syndrome X", an unknown, after growth hormone administration failed.

The Numenorian gene! >_<

Quite interesting. I wouldn't mind living longer,but then again I don't know.
Of course if slow aging became possible it wouldn't be allowed to the general public *cough* maybe if you have the cash, but still. I know the Chinese government would never let it get to the Chinese community if they could pay it.

Yeah... no one is finding any secret aging gene. :P
Or we'll have a big problem in our hands.

I wouldn't mind living my life at a younger age, I'd have to determine whether I wanted to live longer when I got there :P. At least I could probably choose my method of dying more. Old age sounds boring, I'd rather live to 100 look like and feel like I'm 20 the whole time (or younger because I accomplished more in life in my teens then my 20s will ever allow me I feel) and then (as stated before) die in some epic sword-fight fighting the forces of evil of the the secret Illuminati :P. (It's not whether you win or lose the battle, it's that you fought it to begin with).

Also, disease, cars and war are larger problems then aging and it will likely only be an option for first world nations like us. Hate to say it, but kids in Africa can't afford to grow up young and never die. It costs too much and once we have it, we'll place restrictions in place for exactly these reasons. If I have my right mind for a hundred years though and can keep consistency, I WILL learn every science and use it's full power to fix these problems though!

One funny solution is as follows, if you can figure out the human DNA and workings you might be able to figure out how we work and "miniaturize" our components. Thus, make more room by making smaller humans (about 1 ft tall or even shorter) with the same brain capacity and advanced technology, but we'd use a lot less in terms of resources each or space. It sounds funny, but I bet it would work. Plus, you could sky-dive off the empire state building and because of your reduced mass (and terminal velocity) you could hit the ground and walk away (if you're small enough). Talk about epic sky-diving! (Just don't get eaten by a hawk or small bird :P)

Crazy! sounds like something from an anime.

That she's still alive today is a blessing. I'm surprised they only started to talk about her recently though...

Wow, that's freaky. The fact that they couldn't find any mutations makes it even more mysterious. It does sound like an anime plot.
