Pornography + Rape

How would you guys respond to this:

"Do you know how much rape pornography prevents?"

We were having a discussion on my board on whether or not pornography was good or ok and why and this came up...I was stumped for a response. The best I could come up with was "So, if we prevented you from ever watching or seeing porn, you'd rape someone?"

Also, can anyone think of why pornography is bad for non-Christians? I mean, I know it's bad for everyone, but any sort of non-Biblical reason?

a moral society prevents rape, not pornography.
if anything,id say it pornography promotes rape and other deviant acts.some one inclined to commit a rape wont be put off by watching some porn.i'd hazzard to guess many of your serial rapist types have a rather large porn collection.

thats how i see it anyway,im just a silly n00b ,what do i know :dizzy:

eww touchy subject...

:(

a non-biblical reason that pornography is bad.....mainly it warps your view of the opposite sex (or same sex Godforbid).....

say that you're a married non-believer......the more that you burn those images of what society thinks is sexy into your head.....the harder it will be for you to sexually enjoy your wife/husband because you have soooo much to compare them to that they can't really compete with on a physical level.

it seriously hurts relationships, and opens a lot of doors for unfaithfulness, physically, mentally, and emotionally.....

not to mention that it messes with the heads of kids too (finding dad's penthouse under the bed ect)......and probably is one of the major reasons that kids nowadays are getting into so much trouble with STDs and young pregnancies......

a very good book that i read on the subject is..."Every Man's Battle" by Stephen Arterburn and Fred Stoeker...

they give a very personal view of what pornography and related lust issues will do to a marrage or a family.

This put my head in for a spin when I read the title of your thread and your post didn't seem to make sense to me. Rape porn prevents nothing. This is how I view it. The unbeleiver is unsanctified and has the potential of becoming corrupt without bounds. As christians that is not possible. We have the holy spirit to restrain us from such fallacies. The only way to rid constraint would be to reject Jesus Christ as your saviour ( God forbid forsure). The mind of the unbeliever can be easily corrupted by corrupted people. Although the same can happen to christians not strong in the spirit, but usully they eventually get slapped in the face with a newspapper and wake up to what is happening to them or the above might happen. I guess from a non-christian point of view. um. Garbage in Garbage out.

Well, sorry that I couldn't avoid any of the christian perspective. I don't think that theres any way for me to avoid it.

Amen to that, Andyroo!!! We are compelled by the Holy Spirit and commanded as believers to live holy lives. We are "to be holy as God is holy." Jesus Himself commanded and challenged us even further with the commandment against adultery to not even lust (with our eyes) over another.

I myself used to have a major problem with internet porn. It got almost uncontrollable. But the urges are so, so faint now. And even if they show up slightly, I just have to rebuke them and ask God to clean me up. Praise God! Knowing the Truth, we all know that any form of lusting is intollerable, and rationalizing it would be a feeble attempt to compromise God for this world.

I now keep this verse as a wallpaper on my PC to remind me to be careful when online:

"Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to them that love Him."

James 1:12

It's funny they'd say that, because I submit the opposite is true. If every guy considered every girl in the light that pornography presents women, there would be a lot more violence against women, not a lot less.

So a society that says pornography is ok is also saying that it is ok to treat women that way?

not necessarily rape, but a society that says that porn is ok, basically says it's alright to treat people as objects or playthings.

:shady:

Absolutely. (Note: this is not to imply that *sex* is wrong or dirty, but this [meaning porn] is definitely not sex the way God meant or created it. Just a point of clarification.)

The good people responding to this thread have already taken most of my answers. Good job, guys. I'd have one other thing to say, though.

The pornography industry itself is a horrible thing. Every image in every magazine involves real people. So even if every time a person read a porn mag, they didn't rape someone, there's still a lot of "rape" going on. There are some books on the topic... and they're pretty scary. I'm not going to go into detail, but some of it made me a bit sick. It's impossible to condone any industry that does things of that magnitude.

d00dz That book is Awesome! ("Every Man's Battle")

Friend of mine got it for me a while back...

Honestly, the whole "Porn prevents Rape" thing is about as good of an excuse as the "She was asking for it, look how she dressed"... what the person is saying is that they lack any more self control than, say, my dog (and he's actually well behaved compared to some)...

That being the case I vote for "fixing" men like we fix dogs

Porn just drags you down lower... it's almost like drugs. Because it really doesn't satisfy the person (because what's missing is something totally different) they go for the bigger and bigger high. Not everyone mind you, but still. Sadly this is something I know too much about, but I'll leave that sad story for another time.

Good point. That industry is particularly brutal to its own.

Man.. I am so blessed to be around so many good hearted people with all the right things to say...

I don't even know if I would have anything to add...

Amen to all of your responses and i hope it is understood by Rashiir that even if not a Christain marriages, relationships, etc are broken up when we forget to give respect to the ones we want to have a relationship with and that can't be done if we are being lustful about other people or subjects..

Just because someone is not a Christain doesn't mean that God won't weigh guilt on their heart... they just choose not to listen.

I am soo impressed with this group...

I think the mentality was that if some guys didn't have porn, they'd rape some one instead...but I just didn't have an answer...

Thanks for the help, guys. I try to "always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks" but there's always questions that get me...good thing you guys have the answers...

"I tell you the truth, if a man looks at a woman lustfully, he has already committed adultry with her in his heart."

Hmm... I can't seem to remember who said that.

Seriously, MillyFan makes a good point. People might argue the terminology, but looking at it on some levels, things seem entirely different.

Matthew 5:28 -- it's from the Sermon on the Mount.

And that goes for the lady-folk as well. While we naturally are not prone to eye-related lust, we must also guard our thoughts and hearts. Not to mention that we shouldn't intentionally make ourselves the object of lust. We need to bear in mind that regardless of style, and what everyone else is dressing like, we are to dress modestly. Not only is it wrong to wear things that purposely draws the eyes to certain places, you never know when you could be causing a fellow brother in Christ to lust. So in our own way, we can help the guys guard their eyes.

One, yeah, I was being sarcastic. No biggie.

Two, I'd like to extend a sincere thank you to Gypsy for that. You would not believe the difference a bit of modest dress can do. Some time ago, I was doing an exercise on lust. Every time I had a thought remotely lustful, I made a mark on a sheet of paper. It's an interesting way of reviewing how you're doing. What I found was that I could go hours around female friends of mine without a single check- and then someone else could cause a few in a matter of minutes. Thanks.
