Werewolves

Werewolves

Postby Heart of Sword » Sat Aug 20, 2005 7:56 am

I'd rather not go into details on why I'm asking this. All I want is to ask WHERE in the Bible it says werewolves are evil. I'm not talking about the wolfman, I'm talking about the werewolf, which if you didn't know is a person who can transform into a wolf at will. (The werewolves I am speaking of are not people-killing monsters that change on a full moon. Think along the lines of Tokyo Mew Mew.)

EDIT: I'm not talking about the ones that bite, you guys...I'm talking about people who literally turn into wolves--normal wolves.

My mentor, who is an older woman, has said that werewolves are satanic and we got into an argument about it. She says that the Bible says not to be involved with mediums and therefore werewolves are evil...but werewolves have nothing to do with spiritism, mediums, etc. and I have found nothing that says werewolves (in general--I know some are) are bad.

And so I am rather confused. PLEASE do not say "werewolves are bad because animals don't have souls" because it will swiftly turn into an argument that I would rather not have.

The biggest reason I'm asking (not going into the other reasons) is because I adore werewolves and my stories often include them. Are werewolves satanic? Can anyone help me out?

Somthing that bites others to turn them into more....seems a bit "not nice" A vampire does the same thing...and they have a pretty bad rap. Considering they don't really exist, does it matter? Write what you want. Its fantasy.

Im kinda having the same troubles with the R.P's im in. I want to create a character that dosen't exist, but is thought to be evil (not saying werewolves are just thought to be), but im afraid others won't approve. I try my best to shape my character so that it dosen't do the stuff it said to do. You can try that method, (and yes werewolves that don't bite people is a very good way to shape your characher).

Wishing you (and me luck with this).

It'd be all like:
"Hey! You want to come over tonight?"
and they'd be all like:
"Sure! Where do you live?"
And we'd be all like:
"You know that Bio-dome out alittle west in the woods?"
And they'd be all like:
"...:shady: Yeah...?"
We'd say:
"There!"
Then they would slowly back away while we are all like:

No... i have no problem with Constantine, the character is cool. I just find it ironic that you dont believe that they could exist. Like the other characters in the movie disbelieved the existence of demons... Sorry if this still doesnt make sense...

The werewolves in my stories/RPs aren't traditional werewolves. They're descendants of a wolf that was turned into a human in a scientific experiment to put a wolf's brain in a human body. His descendants are people who are both human and wolf and can change back and forth at will. So it's really more sci-fi than anything else. Is that bad?

I don't recall anything in the Bible about werewolves.Besides aren't they more of a Northern European thing?
I do recall from Norse mythology that the Gods could shapeshift(especially
Odin)and that was probably the origin of the idea of the werewolf. Also
ancient Norse Berserkers were supposedly able to change into animals
when they fought.

The idea of werewolves...as far as I know, it's because there was a European phenomenon going on where hunters would shoot a wolf and when they came upon it it would be a dead human. However they then took the phenomenon too far and started burning werewolves and associating them with Satan when most of them were quite innocent.

Since Lycanthropes (technical term for werewolves) are of relatively recent times and crafted through myth and legends, the bible would not be a good reference for them.

It would be like looking through the bible to find if being on the internet is in itself a sinful thing.

Typically, one of the reasons we were given the Holy Spirit was that the new covenant formed through Christ's sacrifice would be flexible and not rock-solid like the Abraham covenant. Let him guide your stories and it should be all right.

PS: If someone doesn't like it, tough, its your story and you can craft it anyway you want.

I think wolves were considered evil during the dark ages (in Western history specifically) when Biblical teachings clashed and mixed and stuff with superstition. The phrase "wolf in sheep's clothing" possibly led to the belief that wolves are evil. I'm probably wrong on all counts, though.

But yeah, in the end, write what God leads you to, not what people tell you to for reasons that don't hold much water.

Interesting origin for the Lycans.

Anyway, I would only second what others have said. Werewolves are a thing of fantasy, and thus neither inherently good nor evil. Good luck with your story

They arnt real. If they were real, and they simply had the ability to turn into wolves, and had not done anything satanic or wrong to gain that ability, I would have to say that there is probably nothing wrong withh them.

As a whole though werewolves aren't as sexy as vampires when it comes to
your monsters.I think it has to do with being all hairy,on the other hand vampires
have this sexual and sensual allure to them that have made them popular through
the centuries.

I would second Lochaber Axe on the biblical reference. The Bible isn't explicitly specific about everything... for example, it doesn't say, "Don't do drugs."

That's not to say I'm against werewolves, per se. Others have already mentioned that they're not real. Witches and mediums are real, and the Bible mentions them.

In my opinion, it's all about context. If you don't make your werewolf characters evil, then they aren't. Elves and fairies aren't considered evil in themselves, are they? Yet they are humanoid/not quite human.

Write what you want.

Something that doesn't exist cannot be satanic.

well I don't know much about Wearwolves, but I don't see how anyone could say that they're evil. I mean, they could be if some satanist was trying to become one or something bizare like that, but they're fictional.

Someone mentioned vampires too... Those are in fact spoken against in the Bible. Says that anyone who drinks human blood will be "cut off" from salvation, because in drinking blood one is drinking the life of the person who bled (Bible says that the life of a person is in their blood).

I know of one "non-evil" werewolf. There is a story (poem?) written by Marie de France during the Middle Ages about Bisclaveret, a knight who turns into a werewolf and was betrayed by his wife once he confessed his secret to her.

What an odd discussion. I'm surprised I didn't see it earlier.

I can't see how fictional characters are automatically good or evil. I'm not sure what relevance Biblical scriptures have on fictional characters themselves. One could right a story about vampires and demons that are not satanic. Writers of fiction have the lee-way to create any kind of world they want to create and that world will operate by the witer's own rules.

termyt wrote:I'm not sure what relevance Biblical scriptures have on fictional characters themselves.

Just to be clear - I don't think the Bible dictates who can or can not be characters in your stories. I hope the Bible does influence what you write and how you write, though.

'Twas me who first mentioned vampires I believe. What I meant was that werewolves aren't as popular in fiction as vampires because they don't have
the sexual allure that the vampires do.

If I remember correctly it was Anne Rice who really introduced that idea that being bitten by a vampire has some sexual connections to it. Not so in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula.

As far as werewolves go, you can make them however you want to. No one's stopping you.
