Another Troll Warning-Messenger Users Watch Out

Postby MillyFan » Mon Sep 08, 2003 9:08 pm

The trolls on this board have a new tactic.

If you have your AIM screenname, MSN Messenger address, Yahoo! Messenger screenname, ICQ ID, or Trillian ID posted, expect to be trolled/spammed.

A few minutes ago, a troll named "nerocaesar13" came on AIM and basically told me that he was the antichrist, that he got my username through his "connections," and when I told him that I was blocking him, he told me to "rot in h*** christian." :sniffle:

I believe he was one of the board trolls (either banned or inactive) and acquired my AIM screenname via my user profile.

Also, many new users have registered without posting or filling in their user profiles. This could be preparation for another attack. :shake: :stressed:

In most of the Messenger programs you can restrict to a whitelist of people you talk to normally, and others must either ask or get explicitly denied (depending on the program). Most of my Messengers are set up to ask me if I want to talk to someone I've never seen before. Usually the handle is obvious.

And, if you get such people on AIM, remember to warn them using the Warn button before blocking them. It will slow down their ability to post, especially if you don't warn anonymously, and temporarily make them less able to bother people.

I do, especially with spam AIMmers. A warn of 100% makes them virtually unable to post for awhile. While you can only warn once per warn cycle yourself, if they bother enough people and enough others warn them also, they can really be slowed considerably.

Hmmm. That is an ethical question. It depends on what you mean by the term "fighting back."

Warning, blocking, and reporting is not what I would call "fighting back" so much as protecting yourself and others from at best wasted time, at worse viruses or something similar they attempt to spread.

However, things like getting into screaming or threatening matches, hacking them, cursing them, or any other thing that involves venting your spite at them or damaging/destroying property is counterproductive, could get you in trouble, and above all else is stooping to their level and being really mean. :waah!:

LOL, me too, me too... I don't use AIM much though, and MSN warns me when someone adds me to their list, so I usually have a good idea about who's trying to contact me.

You know, this is soooooo lame and immature of them.

People who write below their abilities in order to crank out tons of books and make a buck. Especially Christian authors who do that. Outsiders judge us for it, and make fun of us for it, and it makes Jesus look bad. We of all artists on earth should be the most concerned with doing our best possible work at all times. We of all people should write with all our hearts, as if writing for the Lord and not for men.

The whole thing is lame and immature. Plus, you have to wonder how much fun it is for them when you get right down to it. They might get a charge out of it initially, but I don't think there's any doubt over the "hole" they're trying to fill up with that kind of behaviour.

I will keep this in mind this comming weekend when I go to my real home. There I will be logged only for hours at a time instead of just a few short minutes.

Well, I'd say that if you think you're a troll, that's the first step. Try to change your posting style, and then *maybe* you won't be seen as a troll, OK? :)
