My bad, nevermind, I thought the blade was 40" :) But yeah, with a claymore if they get inside your zone then you can't get enough leverage to swing, but with a spear or pike, you can just move your hands down the length of the weapon to shorten it. Though you would have a "tail" sticking out of the back.

I was also wondering, in Tae Kwon Do, what kind of weapons do you get to use?

It's really Kenpo orientated so we don't use many weapons. We've played arouned with Bo's, Sai's, Kama's, etc. I own a Bokken, a 5' foot Bo, and a pair of Tonfa's.

Yeah, we do a America-nized version of it. We closed in the fighting stance a lot (The original was way to wide) and put more of a focus on kicking drills. But almost all of our in-fighting is Kenpo originated. I'm currentley studying Jeet Kun Do. What Martial Arts do you do?

Majanthehun: I'm glad you think so.

Nothing right now, I left Kendo and I had a little taste in special forces HTH :)

However, I really want to do rapier fencing (not the olympic kind, but the "real" kind.), Kenjutsu, which is the "real" form of sword fighting in ancient Japan and/or Chinese spear or staff fighting. Kendo gave me such a headache (literally!), the resounding snap echoing in your ears of the Shinai on your head isn't pleasant, and I wear glasses. As you can probably tell, I like to do weapon based martial arts a lot more than open hand though.

You do Jeet Kune Do? Awesome! It's a very adaptable and fluid martial arts, and one of the most impressive looking as well. Best regards on your training, I'm sure it isn't easy.

SWORDS SWORDS SWORDS SWORDS ARE COOLER.
Anyway swords have more soul and are capable of mercy.
Guns are soulless and are devoid of all mercy.
For all of the sword fans out there. http://www.bytheswordinc.com
Who cares if guns are "better"? You need no skill to shoot an armed man.
All the skill was lost with the age of the sword I suppose. :(
but still. SWORDS SWORDS SWORDS SWORDS ARE COOLER.

>Guns are soulless and are devoid of all mercy.

Not really...you can kill/maim/wound a guy easier than a sword, but if you use rubber bullets or shoot them in a non-vital area then the person will still live.

>For all of the sword fans out there. http://www.bytheswordinc.com

Very cool link, can't wait for them to release the Elven two handed sword from LOTR.

>Who cares if guns are "better"? You need no skill to shoot an armed man.

It's a lot harder than it looks to shoot a moving target or a target behind cover. I have a lot of respect for SWAT, CQB is perhaps the hardest type of gun combat you can get into, as there isn't a sure tactic that will allow you to achieve 100% success.

>All the skill was lost with the age of the sword I suppose. :(
but still.

Not all the skills were lost, there are still some modern day martial arts (both Eastern and Western) that still exist. Though there are more Eastern martial arts though. Also, the martial art that is being taught today probably won't survive in the battlefield of the past, it's more of a self improvement/art form nowadays.

>SWORDS SWORDS SWORDS SWORDS ARE COOLER.

I agree! :)

pistol: USP .45 or FN 5.7
SMG: Mp5/10 or Mp 7 PDW or FN P-90
AR: G-36 or XM-8
Sniper: MSG-90 or AI L-115A1 or Steyr IWS 2k
Shotgun: SPAS-12 or Benelli Nova
MG: M-249 or BMG 15mm

Overall favorite: Mp-5 series, because it's a classic, and the closed bolt w/improved accuracy rocks.

Hey if you would like another website about weapons then here is another one: http://www.swordsonline.com (Its not a link)

Personally Id go there for the armor. Heh heh my favorite helmet is the Salade with the Bevor. Go to the website and go into the armor section. Its the closest thing to a uruk - Hai helmet that ive seen. Man what Id give to get that armor, sword, and shields.

Of course the best is the good ole Lochaber Axe.

That looks really cool, any ideas why they have the wavy design? I'm guessing that'd be quite hard to make like that

I saw a similar design on a 'Lancelot' dagger. The theory is that of serration. Sorry if this is a little graphic, but you asked. ;) A 'wavy' knife will saw through tendon much easier than a straight one. (NOTE: This is implying that you are using a 'plunge cut' and not a slash, obviously.) In theory...

You know what? Forget it. I'm self moderating the rest of this post out of existance. Some things do not need to be said on a 'family friendly' forum.

On a lighter note: Yes. They are tougher to make, and more brittle.

I have to say I'd always choose a sword over a gun -
Swords take more skill and talent to use - you can dedicate your life to the study of swordplay. It's almost an art form, really. I know using a gun isn't just point and click, but it's not like fencing.

Besides, as Fighter would say, swords are so SHINY!!!!
Not many people know this, but I happen to be famous.

well this is gonna be a long post........
First off anyone remember a certain scene in Indiana Jones?
Yeah.
Well actually I have quite a dual mind in this and would prefer to be able to use both.
My charachters in my story carry a myriad amount of weapons, of both edged and projectile type and this mught give a hint of how much I like both.

Kyle: Sword that changes to match the fighting style he's using, 2 45 GSR 1911 semiautos w/ extended barrels, 500max revolver, 2cm caliber semiauto hand cannon (ala hellsing), occasinally a steyer TMP, usu. custom AR called Desert Reaper. Sometimes uses francium frangible bullets coated to keep them from igniting in the chamber in the semiautos.

Kamiya: 9mm pistol, MP5 PDW, Scythe.

Enigma (male): Belgen 5-7, Mossberg stockless shotgun, Bladed tohn fas.

Swords. First. Last. Always. Due to practiality constraints, I'd also take a pair of Browning Hi-Powers in .40 S&W.

I enjoyed reading this thread. It looks like we have quite a few warriors at the CAA ;) .

As for the swords vs. guns question, it really depends on the situation. Personally, I would like to have one of each.

If my oponnent was a fair distance away, I would prefer a gun, probably a semi-automatic rifle of some sort. I am a decent marksman (although I haven't practiced in a while, since we can't exactly keep guns--or swords for that matter--in our dorms :stressed: ), so I wouldn't be too worried about accuracy.

If I was 4-10 feet away, a sword would be my weapon of choice, perhaps with a pistol as a secondary weapon. I haven't had a lot of formal martial arts training, but I have had some experience with melee weapons, and I am trying to learn when I have time. :thumb:

Any closer than 4 feet, and I would go for a short sword/dagger. I might not be able to draw the sword in time (especially if the oponnent already had his weapon drawn, or was using a dagger).

Granted, guns are the better weapons overall. Although swords are a bit more glamorous, it doesn't do any good to have a "cooler" weapon if you have a bullet through the head. Then again, it is important to keep in mind a bit of wisdom that I learned from the "Zombie Survival Guide:"

"Blades don't need reloading."

A gun is only a superior weapon as long as you have ammo and no mechanical difficulties. Otherwise it is just a high-tech club (if that).

Of course, it takes a lot longer to master swords. That is why firearms replaced sword/bows on the battlefield. You can give a bunch of troops (modern) guns, and they will decimate a force armed with blades/bows. Then again, that assumes that you aren't fighting in dense forest/jungle. Then all bets are off.

In the UK swords win hands down because most decent guns are illegal. This makes the sword a more practical weapon.
